PDW Cartridges

I really dont know -- I have been recommending we take it to SAAMI for over two years.

Hornady makes it for us, One Shot could then buy it from us.
However it may end up being prohibitively expensive.

Just out of curiosity, and if you are allowed to discuss such matters outside of KAC, what is the company reasoning behind not taking this cartridge to SAAMI and opening it up to the market?

People are going to flame me but 7.62x39 is a reasonable round for "shorter" rifles. I get about 2120fps out of a 12inch barrel VZ with Czech surplus. Velocity loss is very reasonable for losing a lot of barrel length.

Nothing wrong with the 7.62X39 except the tapered casing, if you look at all the PDW they are all pretty much aiming for the same performance characteristic.

I was sitting on the fence with the 300 Whisper, until the 300 Blackout came out, wonder how big an impact will the 300 Blackout will have in the PDW category?

For the AR platform, something in 6mm or 6.8mm may be great - especially with a Whisper-style case for OAL concerns.

An AR redesigned around 5.7x28 would be an interesting mix of existing tech on different platforms, but at that point why not just use a proper PDW from FN to begin with.

Handgun cartridges are great, but lack the body armor penetration and vehicle penetration one wants in a proper PDW - and if using a handgun cartridge, why not just use it in your handgun?

I think a fast 6.8 is a great answer to this kind of problem.

Like Kevin B. said, these rounds are useless. Several special forces units took them into the field for trial and while they readily defeat many types of soft armour and a few hard ones, they would basically be like a stab wound from a 4.6-5.7mm knife. Yes it would be deadly, but seldom RIGHT NOW, which is when you kinda need it to be in a gunfight...

PWD use high velocity bullet to defeat modern body armor. The ideal caliber would be high velocity, low recoil ... wait that's what HK and FN use ;)

Forget the body armor issue and a 9mm MP5K is very tough to beat

I'd go with a compact SMG that's able to utilize the Russian 9x19 +P+ armor piercing round.

the good old 7.62x39 gets my vote
the long wait is almost over

I would NEVER recommend using a handgun round in a long gun. Want a handgun, carry one, put why in the earth would you limit your long gun to a unnecessarily anemic round?

5.7x28 (FN) and 4.6x30 (Hk) where designed for a rather usless NATO cross hangun/PDW concept.
Basically you take a long gun, and dumb it down to be cross compatible.

Our (KAC) PDW was designed around an ammuntion that was purpose built for a PDW, a 0-300m requirement (PDW folks may have to shoot it out with AK weilding foes), and to function effectively in a short barreled weapon.

Essentially what I was thinking. I really like the 6x35 but it won't feed reliably from the AR mag and building mags to fit the 6x35 is kind of a non-starter.

I REALLY like the 300 Whisper in an AR based PDW. Subsonics give up nothing in terms of performance with very short barrels. Yet the thing can push a 110gr bullet to roughly 2200 fps or a 150gr bullet to about 1700 fps. The nice thing about the 300 Whisper is it uses all standard AR components except for the barrel itself.

Kevin, do you see this cartridge ever going mainstream? Or is it something that KAC plans to keep as more of a proprietary cartridge?

In case you didn't know, the 6x35 cartridge has been around for years and years. You may have heard of it before ... 6mm Whisper?

KAC has def found the niche for this round though.

Magpul is building our SR635 mags -- I am sure Darren could get you some if you really really wanted ;)

All the 6x35 is, is a .221Fireball blown out to 6mm, as Suputin said, its basically a 6mm Whisper, albiet with our 6x35 brass we use a large rifle primer, as it helps burn all the powder more uniformily in a short barrel gun.

Kev,

Since you're using the large rifle primer, am I safe in assuming you're using some sort of ball powder?
