Hey fellas im going to be in New Zealand for a good period of time between Now and My Alberta Black bear hunt reality trip to Peace River!!!!

so i dont have alot of time infront of a computor, getting ontop of what needs doing now, im looking for someone to Tan my Bear hide if i am to be succesful in stalking and placing a dirty 30 cal in the armpit! heaven forbid i cross a wolf track :D

i have checked Australian import Laws, im good to go- aslong as the Hide is Tanned and the Skull/s very clean (almost professionally)

Would anyone in the Area be interested in a paid job of tanning a Hide? or cleaning up a skull?
i'd love to document what i can while im there, if this sounds like something you may be able to help out with- please PM me :)

any info welcomed- thanks CGN

Edit- I may have a few days available in Edmonton- TBC- as i fly in out most likely and have a Friend in that Area!

Be prepared for a long lead, we’ve had lots of bears tanned for clients, months is not abnormal. The skin is definitely not something you’d be likely to be packing in your bag. I have no cheap ways, but can share the right ways if needed, we’ve exported bears to Aus / NZ. Skulls are easily done yourself by boiling if in a time crunch, though macerating or beetles are far better- neither of which it sounds like there’s time for.

can you give me a rough price on how much shipping is on these , or is it lucrative discussion that il have to delve right into just to find out?

i didnt think about how many bears would be getting tanned while im there... hmm il look into diy.
cheer bro

the diy boil clean is touch an go with customs biosecurity, i had my tahr taken off me an charged for quaranteen.... but it was shot 2 days prior an still wet from boiling LOL

How much are people paying for a Bear Rug?

how much is typical Tanning process?

anyone had Euro mount professionally done- how much?

need a fair idea so im not going in blind and they pick up on the accent, ya know ;)

and need to start putting a few more chips away each week i think L O L !

Nobody is going to try and screw you for being foreign, tons of foreign bear hunters go through western Canada every spring, you’ll be a regular customer. I know what it costs here in NW BC, however best to just get a quote from the shop you want to use close to where you’re going. They’re going to be forwarding the skin to a tannery to be clear, with a few month lead likely. They’ll likely be familiar with sending a bear to Australia, if not shoot me a PM and I’ll give you some exporting contacts, I make nothing off them I can just assure you you’ll actually get your bear(s). Expect to spend some money on this process it’s not something to be done of the cheap. I’ve never heard of a self tanned or ubrew bear being successfully exported, customs generally wants tannery paperwork in whatever country is accepting it, and tanning is not a quick turn around process. Big difference between dip and pack and tanning, and to my knowledge bears going to Australia need to be fully tanned and supple, a finished product, not dried and salted (dip and pack).

Western fur tanners in Edmonton :
Dry tan = $57/linear foot

Western tanners also offers beetle cleaning, and a full rug mount if that’s what you want. And I’m sure they could deal with all the export bs. The majority of taxidermists here use them for their dry tanned bears, so I doubt they will be cheaper on tanning prices. But I would send them an email to confirm prices/services/complications etc

Yeah thats fairly spot on Ardent, no dry salt hide at all, has to be 'tanned' , so having papers would be more ideal and save having it 'treated' on grounds of suspicsion!

ive touched a few places via google but not much reply yet. il try the above contact also thanks DG

Tanning will be the cheap part, proper export is where the cost is. Check out Ron’s Wildlife Service for exporting (it’ll have to be tanned first, and skull professionally cleaned). A service like this is what many taxidermists will subcontract the export to in the end anyhow, you could be the “contractor” in the job and arrange the shipments / tanning / cleaning, and let somebody like Ron’s make sure it gets to you. Would save you a few bucks.

You nailed it without meaning to, they take care of CITES, they pack it professionally, and ship it with the docs so when it shows up at your customs without you there, there’s not a red alert. Legal or not dead bears or anything with horns or claws in a box cause a circus at any customs when they show up without proper process. Generally, that circus is more expensive than just doing it right with an exporter. The tannery won’t put it in a box to Australia, and many taxidermists don’t handle CITES and international shipping- that said a few do, including mine. Just ask the taxidermist if they do their own export, and if not consider dealing direct with Ron’s. It’s literally all they do.

You can travel with finished goods, and explain in person and be on your way smoothly. But unless your trip is a few months or more long, won’t be possible, so an exporter is a damn helpful service.
