By the way, my friend's Grandfather went down with the Arizona in 1941.

I hadn't heard of that, but now that I have, I am completely unsurprised that survivors would eventually want their ashes interred there.
 
I didn't know they did this.

A few years ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Arizona memorial. The ship was still leaking oil and you could see it in the water immediately surrounding the ship. I believe it is an issue the memorial site is dealing with to this day and how to remove the last of the oil and fuel reserves without disturbing the site.
 
Getting back to the topic of the original post and away from the divisive political crap....

Thanks for posting video... very moving and I never realized that was happening there ...

A very respectful and thoughtful way of handling the remains of these veterans ...

I visited both the USS Arizona and the USS Missouri while in Honolulu this past winter. The weather and other things in Hawaii are great, but our visit to Pearl Harbor and these 2 ships was the highlight of my trip. The 2 battleships, one sunken and one afloat, are approx. .5 km apart and are the bookends to WW2 in the Pacific. The war started on one and ended on the other.

Honolulu is crawling with Japanese tourists just about everywhere you go. They were a lot fewer and are a lot more subdued at Pearl Harbor than at other touristic sites.
 
I've been to Pearl Harbor twice - the first time seeing the Arizona with my wife. The second time I took my daughters as well but unfortunately, all of the tours were booked up by 11:30 in the morning for the rest of the day to go to the Arizona. If you go, get your ticket in advance (as you enter the site) for a later tour of the Arizona. It really is quite moving - you can still see the oil leaking from the ship as you walk through the Memorial.

I wasn't going to post my thoughts, but what the heck...Our visit to Pearl Harbor and the Arizona was the highlight of our families trip to Oahu two years ago..A solemn and sobering visit but I just couldn't stand the loud Japanese tourists taking their usual 'smiling family shots' with the Arizona in the background...A wry smile and raised eyebrows from a Park Ranger said it all....I could'nt do that job...I'd end up punching someone...
 
I take it the video is some sort of ceremony of some kind. I can't watch videos with dial up. I made a special trip from Maui to the other island just to see the Pearl Harbour memorial. Was able to buy a nice coin from a vet at a table also.We booked several days ahead in order to see it.
 
Is it true that Elvis Presley paid for the memorial out of his own pocket? I am quite sure I seen a interview with Johnny Cash waaaay back on the TV and he talked about it if I remember right. 60 minutes or a show like that.
 
I pay my respects to the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial every year.

It is the first thing that I do upon arrival to Oahu.

Each of our visits we wear Hawaiian leis.
They are deposited to the ocean over the Arizona in respect.

In answer to the question of Elvis Presley paying for the memorial.

March 25, 1961, Elvis Presley hosted a benefit concert at Pearl Harbor’s Bloch Arena,
raising over $64,000.

There is just something wrong with some people..
 
from what iv herd there just letting it leak. they call the discouloration in the water the "tears of the fallen" or somthing to that extent. and it would be disrispectful to clean it up.
