Pedersoli or Traditions

Browning Mountain Rifle is nice. Been discontinued for a while now, but matters not to L&R lock company. This is a rifle that is best accompanied by the original owner's manual. Took me quite a while to discern that the factory suggested .023 patches. I substituted .018 thou as .023 is unheard of in these parts. Also went to .495 versus .490 RB. Groups tightened up considerably.

Ever think of building one from a kit? Then you have control over fit and finish, and you get the satisfaction of shooting a rifle you built yourself. I built mine 30 years ago, there's nothing too complicated, just finishing. Very satisfying project...
I ordered my Lyman Hawken Great Plains flintlock for PRB in kit form directly from Track of The Wolf in the States. No problemo with shipment in states or Canada. Canada does not deem a flintlock as a firearm for PAL purposes. The kit is cheaper than the assembled rifle and goes together like a wet dream. It is basically just assemble, sand, stain, and finish. All hardware has been completely relieved in the stock so there is no carving to get the lock, trigger assembly etc to fit. You can leave it in the white or you can order a cold browning solution and brown the barrel and hardware. easy peasey. Have had many complements on my Hawken at the range. The barrel on the Hawken flinter is 32 inches and the twist is 1-66 for patched round ball. I upgraded mine to a L&R lock, white lightning touch hole liner, and a deerslayer trigger. It goes bang every time, even if my flint is dull and I am not paying attention. I have to do my loading technique very badly before it will not fire. The trigger pull is beautiful, crisp, clean and breaks like glass. One last thing, order a 54 over a 50. More stopping power, and lighter as the barrel outside diameter on the 54 is the same as the 50

Thanks for all the ideas and advice.

The deed is done, I just ordered the Lyman Great Plains Flintlock kit (.54) from Track of the Wolf, now I just have to wait for the package to arrive and the fun starts!

Good for you! You will enjoy it. While you wait, you need to do a bit of research about bluing/browning, and wood finish. I did one years ago with rust blue, and it was really, really nice, way better than cold blue, or browning, but there is a process, and you need some stuff, and it takes some time. It is very durable. Google it. Same with the wood. I frigged around with all sorts of ideas, but the one that I preferred was "boning". IIRC, you do all of the usual stuff to the wood, then you get a bone (not that kind...), a smooth one, like a turkey leg bone, and draw it along the grain, and you end up with a sort of satiny, very smooth finish, that seems to resist dings. No further finish, like urethane, is needed. Google it, too, and see what you think. It is often used on baseball bats, it smoothes out the grain, and prevents splitting. Have fun, and let us know how you make out.
