Peep sight for a 858?

I would like to remove the open sight on my CZ 858 and install this little peep on the action cover. I liked the peep on the FN SLR.

The sight will slide into a dovetail. If I cut an opening into the action cover, this sight could be pushed on.

Athough the cover wiggles a bit, it seems to return to the same position.

The iron sights have been zeroed (using the adjustments on the front sight). Similar to the challenge of adding a peep sight to the SKS, the trick is to get the peep LOW enough to line up with the sight picture of the open sight (which will later be removed).

This little sight is perfect for height. The other way to do it is to install a Central or Redfileld sight. They use a block that is bolted to the side of the receiver.

The action cover is thin. I am hoping that it is springy enough to wedge the sight in the dovetail.

Been almost a year now maybe I should just finish it off.
 
The little sight is from a M1 carbine. The dovetail measures 0.475" across.

The problem with the rail on top is that a sight mounted on it would be too high for the front sight pin. By my measurement, the peep hole should be only about 0.4" above the cover.

The butt is slightly short for me, so a butt-mounted tang would be too close to my eye.

I am wondering if I could file a bit of a flat at the rear top of the cover and then just glue the sight on with some JB Weld. How strong is that stuff? MAybe after it is glued on I could drill and tap a screw in from the inside of the cover.

If nothing will hit the screw head underneath it could work. JB alone won't hold for long with all that banging around. If you can't tap a screw in, then silver solder should do. Paint if afterward.
Redfield sight tapped on the receiver side will be the nicer option though and more secure/accurate.
 
Hey, if you don't get it to work, let me know if you want to sell that sight. Need one for my M1 carbine. LOL

Actually, I'm interested in if you get it to work, I want to add a peep to my VZ58.
 
?... Remove the aperture, drill and countersink down through the sight base for a screw then drill out the top rivet hole at the back of the cover and tap it for the screw..?

I don't have my 858 in front of me but I have been thinking of how to mount a cover based aperture sight for a bit as well. If I recall correctly there's not much meat to the mounting base/spring perch under the cover. I have wondered about adding a spring to preload the cover in place or a set screw to lock it down and ensure a sight remains zeroed (overkill perhaps).

Milt- The cover is too thin to take a screw, so tapping into that block is the only way to find some meat.

I think I am going to try to glue the sight on with some Devcon. Either the M1 carbine sight, or a trimmed Lee Enfield L sight. The Lee sight would give me more surface to glue to.

I too am wondering about the wobble of the cover. I am hoping that it tends to always return to the same place. I will try spreading it a bit to make it a tighter fit.
 
What do you guys think about this idea of putting it on the rear cover?

I think with MiltonBradly front gas block mod and this idea of a rear sight it would be the cats meow.

Is that an add on sight to a stock cover, or a whole new cover? Using the ends of the take down pin... Now there's a thought. Make a longer pin that is snug in the receiver and a saddle that bridges the cover at the back to mount a sight to...

I'm wondering about grinding the cover retaining rivets off and seperating the cover from the base, making a new base with a provision for mounting a sight then re-mounting the cover to it... something that fills the back end up to allow it to be milled flat.

Let us know how bonding it down works out Ganderite... I hope it holds zero for you. I'm curious about how you feel the accuracy is (hopefully) improved with a nice long sight radius.

I was thinking of maybe tig welding an AR15 rear sight to the top of the rear cover.
