I'm ready to buy a M96 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser, to be used for Whitetail Deer hunting.

I don't think I am going to bother with a scope and would like to use a peep sight.

The gun is drilled and tapped for a side mount......?

Which peep sight would you recommend for this gun and can any peeps use these side mount holes? Will I need to drill and tap somewhere else...

Where can I purchase one of these peeps?

Thanks for the help

I have a Stiga 96 that I will be mounting an XS ghost ring sight on. They make a model that will fit 98, 96, and 95 mausers with the charging guide still intact.

I looked at Williams peep sights, but I don't like the way they mount, right next to the bolt handle. The XS is a tidy little unit that mounts like a scope base. 2 holes, 1/2" spacing on top of the rear reciever ring. Unfortunately the sight is fairly high and will require a new front ramp ( which comes with the sight ) or a very tall front post.

I ordered mine from Elwood Epps, which I would not recommend since I ordered on June 11, and have not yet recieved them. Brownells seems like the way to go. I have talked to other members who have ordered from Brownells and they recieved them in about 2 weeks.

The Lyman and Williams gallows style sights are good, but are prone to damage if the rifle is dropped. I have the XS sight on my wife's rifle, and it is alright, but it has no protection around the aperture, so I believe there are better choices.

With the rifle drilled and tapped for a side mount, I would choose a mount with Weaver or Picatinny attachment points and purchase the New England Custom Gun's excellent peep sight that is compatable with the Weaver base. The NECG sight comes with a normal aperture that is a thick rim and smallish aperture, but it is easily drilled out to a thin rim large aperture ghost ring. The sight is adjustable for windage and the elevation is adjusted by screwing the stem of the aperture in and out which makes different sight setting repeatable if you record where they are. The front sight might have to be changed as a ghost ring of any make mounted on a scope base sits much higher than the rear sight.

Google New England Custom Gun to see their products and you can buy directly from them with a phone call.
