Winter boredom is getting to me I think.
Wanting to start a project, and thinking about a cheap 9.3x57 and dolling it up a little.
Does anyone have any ideas of where I would be able to obtain an aperture sight that would work on the reciever of a m96 sporter. I will shop around for a rifle that hasn't been drilled yet. I will be able to drill any hole pattern needed.
Any help would be great.
Not looking for something super expensive. These rifles can be had for under $300. Thinking of cutting the barrel to 20", nice light and handy. No desire to scope a rifle like this and open rear sights don't cut it for me.
Thanks

You could make a copy of the simple little peep sight that Francis Sell (the outdoor author) invented and that was marketed by Tradewinds Inc. of Tacoma Wa. for their imported Husqvarna sporters back in the day... I think it was called the "Tradewinds Snap-Shooter" and was designed to fit the factory drilled HVA actions, which generally have the same dimensions as a Swedish Mauser 96 (even the bolts can interchange...sort of) ...Its a simple design and wouldn't be all that hard to make up with a drill press and a bit of good file work. I would avoid the big blocky old Lyman receiver sights. . ... I couldn't find a picture of it on-line but it looked something like this...although it maybe was even a bit simpler...the guys over at the Swedish Civilian and Sporting Firearms Forum on Gunboards probably know about it (http://forums.gunboards.com/forumdisplay.php?50-Swedish-Civilian-amp-Sporting-Firearms)

Well, they won't come cheap... I have Södering and Elite sights, but they're not cheap either...

My 9.3x57 came with weaver bases. I modified a meduim high scope base into a peep sight and put a fiber optic rod on the front sight.

Nobody's got a "solderin" for sale ? I have a m96 that has been tapped for this type but don't see them for sale anywhere except on guns at tradeex

I once modified a Sako dual range diopter sight to fit a weaver base. They are nice sights but hard to find .I am trying to get a friend to reproduce them but he does not think there is a market for them.

The Williams FP and Lyman are very good solid sights with click adjustments, but the require that the stock be altered to fit the sight. They would be my first choice depending on the project at hand. If it's a working/beater gun, I wouldn't hesitate to alter the stock and use one. Other alternatives would be sought if the gun was a bit nicer.

A skinner lo pro would work ok. You wouldn't have any windage adjustment but lots of elevation adjustment. The trouble I had with all the Husqvarna's I've owned was trying to mount a taller front sight without butchering the rifle...

The purpose of the rifle for me would be in the working rifle category. Perhaps the Williams or lyman would be the way to go. I like the room for wind and elevation adjustments.
Thanks for your guys help.
Now if any of you have a spare 9.3 kicking around I would gladly take it off your hands

Just check tradex. They have a lot!

Oh I'm aware of the trade ex prices and I will go that route if no one else has one here. I would rather buy off of someone who has looked it over a bit and/or had a chance to shoot it. Hard to tell what you are getting from the tiny picture and rather vague description they give you on trade ex. Just my preference to buy private

Well, I agree if one wants a recent aluminium-made sight. I was referring to my other post.
There are also some Lyman - HVA receiver sights floating around but they are not cheap either.

I found a few on trade ex that say they are drilled and tapped for side mount. Now I'm wondering if they mean side mount scope base or for a lyman reciever sight. Hoping it's for reciever sight
