I recently acquired a Marlin 336 which according to the serial # I looked up was made in the 50s ( the same yr I was born I hate to admit.)

Anyway, I put a Williams FP peep sight on it. It actually shoots quite well and I've got the windage adjusted but cannot get the elevation right. It shoots about 6" high at 50yds with the sight as low as it will go.

Am I doing something wrong?

thanks for any advice

You will need a higher front sight . Are you currently shooting 150 grain bullets? If you are try switching to 170 grain and try again before you switch the sight.

6" high at 50 yards is still rising quite a big. I'd say you need a much higher front sight. That rifle had a very low rear sight from the factory, so you'll need to match it up. Do you have a ramp front or is the sight dovetailed right in? If it is a ramp, you can just get a taller ramp.

Skinner Sights (timski) on marlinowners.com makes nice ramps/sights for marlins.

Funny you should bring this up.

I had the same problem. My rifle came with no sights at all so I put a receiver sight on the rear and bought a front one at a gun show and ended up shooting high like you.

I just ordered a Tru-glo sight for my 1950s Marlin from Wholesale Sports.

I did the calculation and determined that I need the .53 sight.

I hope that solves it!

i just had this issue... check out this website www.skinnersights.com
tim makes these almost exclusively for marlins (he's a marlin fanatic) and they are cheap but very well made. i got one which is dovetailed to the barrel which yours likely is also and it's narrow enough to get 1.5" groups at 100m with the peeps, try doing that with a firesight. firesights are cheap plastic and are crap for accuracy past 60m. skinners are also made to "trim to fit" so you simply file the top down if it's too tall, i used a dremel to bring mine down 1/8" so i get a nice low peep.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS SIGHT! please dont put a cheap plastic piece of modern crap on such a beautifull old rifle... it deserves better than that!
