Peep sites for Marlin 336

New to shooting...the site has been very helpful...thanks to CGN members.

I am looking at replacing the factory sites on my Marlin 336. Checking other threads I noticed recommendations for:

1) Williams - found these in SIR catalogue - how would you mount these? They appear to mount on the side. Would the receiver have to be drilled and tapped?

2) XS/Ashley Ghost rings - can't find thes...who in Canada carries them?

I also found Lyman peep sites at Wholesale. Again, curious how they mount on the receiver. Somewhere I saw a set of peeps that mount right on top of the receiver using the factory drilled holes.

Any info would be helpful. Thanks
 
Brockman makes a peep sight and it's $129 USD.

Williams also makes one @ $35 USD.

XS Sight Systems too, @ $90 USD.

All availible from Brownells.

As Amphibious says with the Williams, the Lyman sight also bolts on to the side of the receiver with no drilling and tapping. (The two screws on the left side rear of the receiver).

Other types are meant to mount on the top and use the rear two scope mount screws on the top of the receiver. XS/Ashley and others use this method.

Personally I like the side mounts as they can be set lower and can usually use the Marlin front sight. XS and others have to be mounted higher and you need a replacement front sight to work with them.

Whatever you choose Chilli your gonna love it compared to the buckhorns :)
 
Thanks for the infor.

I would prefer to keep the front sight so I decided to go with the Lyman Model 57 peeps from Wholesale. Comes with two peeps and appears to be easier to adjust than the Williams. As Salty said whatever I choose will be better than the buckhorns. I have fired a friends SMLE with peeps and man is accurate and easy to shoot.

RePete...thanks for the sources but I prefer to stick with Canadian sources. I had an upleasant experience once bringing in some merchandise from the US...a $30US item ended up costing me almost $100CA with all the fees. Would have been cheaper to buy in Canada.

I knew I could count on CGN members.
 
Yup... Here's another vote for the Lyman receiver sight. I put one on my 336CS and it shoots nicely (I retained the original front sight). One thing I did do is remove all of the moving parts of the OEM rear sight unit - except for the long "soldered on" flat spring that is attached to the barrel. Without the other moving parts, the flat spring lays pretty well flush with the barrel and totally out of the way of the new receiver sight unit. I can take a picture of it if you like...

Yeah, sorry salty, I forgot the flat spring is actually dovetailed in place on the barrel. I honestly don't know if it looks any better than removing it and having a plug put in, but as far as I'm concerned, it looks fine the way it is. I'll have pics up asap...

I suggest plugging the dovetail with purpose-made slot fillers. Looks very neat and protects the edges.

Lyman or Williams are good if you do a lot of fun shooting at different ranges with different loads, so you can dial in for tajectory. The Ashely sights are very good for hunting, but usually need drilling and tapping.

I'd do it if having the OEM spring/dovetail assembly sitting there bothered me. The only reason why I removed the rest of the moving parts was that I wanted the OEM rear sight totally out of the way when using the Lyman peep. Without the "moving parts" attached, it pretty much lies flat against the barrel. I don't think it looks half bad, so it's gonna stay there for now...

I like it 'lowdrag :) I think I'm going to do the same thing to the next Marlin that I'm going to get a Lyman for. Keeps the sight frame in place, nice and neat, not in the way and now you have less parts to loose. ;)

Couldn't get a Lyman...Wholesale was out of stock...no plans to get them in anytime soon :mad:

So I ordered the Williams from SIR :)
