Although I only somewhat recently finished my first AR, I've got the bug to build another. Even moreso now that I have a MUCH better idea what I'm doing.

Next one I want to build would be a short barrel AR, like 10.5 or less. Is there any way to make a short barrel AR without them being ignorantly loud? I was shooting last week next to a guy who I think went out of his way to make it as loud as possible, I could hardly stand being next to him, pretty sure my brain is bleeding still. Now obviously I don't know for sure if his intent was to make it large explosion loud or just happens to be that way with his setup.

But is a short barrel AR doable with having apporximatley the same report as say a 14.5" barrel?
 
Ive got a 10.5 with a KX3 and while its loud, its no where near as loud as an SBR with a standard flash hider or side exit comp. A troy Claymore is another good choice or an S&J forward comp. They all direct the gas and sound forward. The concussion is something you just have to deal with, but the noise can be greatly reduced.

When I'm behind the trigger of my 7.5" (with a linear comp) it really doesn't seem much louder than a 14.5"; it is only ignorantly loud to the spectators. The point I'm trying to make is, when it comes to SBRs, be the shooter and your problem is solved. :D
 
I find that using hearing protection works pretty good.

I'm running a 10.5" barrel with a large single port brake and I love it.
 
Yup get behind it, there are muzzle device that help to keep things reasonable, but they will still be louder than most.
bottom line is: we need suppressors.
 
If you dont give a #### about anyone other than yourself, throw a brake on there and have at er!
If you want to avoid being a douche, just use a standard a2 FH.

As for the short-barreled AR, keep in mind that if this is going to be your only 5.56 platform, you are sacrificing a lot of performance by way of considerably less muzzle velocity. You may not care about performance at 300, but you are also giving up a lot of stopping power at immediate ranges, too. And I'm not talking a 10% drop in energy compared to a 24" barrel, but more like a 40% energy loss.

The only reason I was willing to get a short-barrel AR (have put a deposit on DD MilSpec+ Mk18) is that I already have a Mossberg MVP to push 5.56 to better ranges with more ooopmh.

If for whatever limitations you can only have a few rifles and you don't have a longer 5.56, I would advise getting something like a 16-18" AR platform.
 
I have a 7.5" Rock River Arms with a standard A2 hider. She barks like a champ. I don't go to the action range for peace and quiet.
 
I had a Battlecomp 2.0 on my 11.5" and have a BCM Mod 0 on my 10.3", behind it is fine but I do notice the flash, bystander notice the concussion it but it is bearable. I shot a 10.3" with a compensator, cause I peeked to know what was so loud... And that's not for me, way to loud and way to much flash IMHO.
 
I have a 7" RRA with a flaming pig and it works well to throw the sound down range. It's wicked for BBQ'ing also :cool:

I didn't know short barreled AR's have a lack of knowledge to the sound they make.

Better go see your doctor, they have a pills for that.

Let's see, Tavor for $2800 or an AR that will outshoot the Tavor for half the price. OP obviously doesn't care about restricted or non restricted and was asking a specific question, try to stay on topic. Not everyone has Tavor fever.

OP, look for a linear compensator. I have an Allen Gunworks linear on my 6.5 inch AR and it is actually fairly comfortable to shoot. S&J also make a nice linear and I have one on my non restricted 300 Blackout barrel for my ACR.

I don't know about that, my 6.5 inch stops every piece of paper I point it at ;)
I would use my 12 inch if I needed to work with it though. Or my 18.5 inch ACR.
 
A linear comp is the only way it won't be super obnoxious. Any of the already mentioned comps will do.
