Pencil vs CF barrel

Intersting comments.

18" Faxon Pencil barrel shows up as 1.97 pounds:

18.6" BSF Carbon Fiber barrel is 29.9oz, or 1.83 pounds:

So either these stats are wrong, or everyone saying that a carbon fiber barrel has to weigh more than a pencil barrel is wrong.

No, their lengths are the deciding factor.

Pretty much all CF barrels are heavier than faxon pencils if 16" and shorter, 18" and longer the CF's seem to be lighter. My 10.5 faxon pencil was 4-6oz lighter than comparable CF's, but when looking at NR barrel lengths the CF wins. Though it is 2-3x the price of a faxon, and my faxon is -accurate-.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet...nv2291c5UHRDyNXuSXGObumqM/edit#gid=1281452680 though Carbon Fiber barrels haven't been added there yet (feel free to add), you can compare most known steel barrels from that list to known CF weights.

I'm calling bull#### and have to disagree with you. Show me a 20" CF barrel in (.308win or 5.56) that is lighter than a same caliber Faxon 20" pencil or gunner barrel.

Those BSF fluted CF barrels have all been recalled, because they have been exploding. There is only so much metal that can be removed from a barrel before it becomes unsafe, BSF has litterally crossed the line with those barrels. The weight is quoted from the BSF website, which I believe to be overly optimistic based on the couple BSF barrels I have weighed in person. Faxon barrels in my experience weigh as advertised.

A full CFW barrel is twice the cost of a faxon pencil barrel , but it’s also the better barrel and worth the extra cost.
You get better accuracy, way less heating, and it looks awesome.
I’ve owned both.

I wouldn’t even consider the BSF.
One blew up and Griffen 86 had issues with two of his.
