So I have somewhat of a dilema which hopefully a few on here will be able to clarify. I am trying to decide if I need/want to upgrade my binos to a 'better' pair. They will be mainly used for hunting.
I presently have the Pentax PCF 7x50's and they are relatively bright and clear. However they retail about $250.

I have researched the various makes out there and the brand that I am contemplating buying are the Vortex Viper 8 x 42 or 8.5 x 50. These retail around $700. I do not really want to exceed $1000 plus for a pair of binos.

I am sure that the quality of the Vortex glass is superior to the Pentax but the question is : Will I be able to discern the difference?

Check out www.cameralandny.com

You should be able to get the Vipers for waaay less than $700.

I got my 8x42 vipers from Doug at cameraland for less than $450 to my door!

They are awesome glass - if you've googled them, you've seen the reviews. In my experience, yes, you will notice a difference between them and the pentax PCF.

There are better grades of Pentax that don't cost that much more. The roof prism 42's tend to be superb. The Nikon Monarch ATB's are also superb right up there with the best of the best.

If you don't mind a porro/dog leg bino and willing to pay that type of money, Nikon Superior E was the top bino in the world for a few years (early 2000's). Considered by birders to be the top of any bino at any price. These can now be had well under $1000.

I have only played with Nikon and Pentax vs Euro brands. The Japanese products give amazing performance for the dollars spent.

If budget is on your mind, I am stunned at how well the nikon Action EX Extreme binos are. Depth of field, clarity, etc are superb and these are $200 binos.
