Hi Guys
Anyone have experience with a PERFORMANCE CENTER MODEL 629 .44 MAGNUM HUNTER??
Thinkin of buying one and would like to know if its worth the cash?
I want a little more bang than my autos 9mm's, 40's.
Used to have a S&W 686...
Will be a range gun, until I check what is all involved to hunt in the US with it if possible?

THX

I've handled one but didn't 'pull the trigger' because it was a little too superfly for me.. and $2K. It was like any other smith 29/629 but with cosmetic enhancements and other options like the rail and compensator which may or may not be useful. Some will say the trigger is better but i didn't notice.

A value proposition is a personal thing. You like what you see, go for it. Is it better than a standard 29/629? I'd say probably not unless you really like the looks and features. If you do, the one on EE is not a bad deal.

One of the finest pistols I own. 44mag power, trigger is superb, compensator is effective. Worth every penny. Saw one on EE for $1450 about 2 weeks ago

Just make sure it isn't a "V COMP" ... I almost bought one a couple weeks ago, they had been brought in by someone's error. They actually have a 4" barrel and had been registered as "Stealth Hunters" The RCMP are aware and are rounding them up as I type this... several were brought in to a gun store in Alberta. Send a private message if you need more details.

I'd be interested in more details for sure. I always understood the v-comp was 4.25" not including the attachable compensator

Compensators do not contribute to overall length of a barrel, and do not contribute to legal overall length unless permanently attached.

Yes I get that, which is why I said not including the comp. Without the compensator, i understood that the barrel is still extended. Here is a pick without the compensator and standard barrel cap. I was told that while it is generically listed as a 4" gun on the Smith site, the slight extension actually puts it into Canadian restricted territory. Some retailers in the US (even IRGs) list it as a 4.25" barrel. I've never measured one personally, that is just what I was told by some reliable sources as I have looked into bringing one up from the US and I know people have bought them in Canada already.

A barrel cap wouldn't count as total length either.

I spoke with the RCMP personally and the FRT is prohib. It is listed as 4" and I called S&W directly and verified it was 4". Some US sites list it at 4.25" but it is incorrect. When I was looking at the revolver I had the owner send me a pic of his registration and it had been registered at a stealth hunter which has a barrel length of 191mm or something like that... anyways obviously not even close to 4". While I was on the phone, they looked into where the seller had purchased from which verified he was telling me the truth and then they immediately went to another screen where they could see when these came in and how many came... I wasn't given this info but was privy to "HOLY $HIT" lol. When I asked about the VCOMP, they were able to verify using the manufacturer number and also by describing the revolver to me... it is a unique design and can't easily be confused with anything else offered. Also, it would be unlikely due to the slab side design that an extended version would be available...shorter maybe through custom shop, but not longer.

The cap just fits over the protruding end of the barrel, doesn't add length.

Here is a pic I just found. Some guy measured with comp removed and sure enough, you are right, it is sub 4". Wow.

Yep, it pays to do your due diligence and if something seems awry, don't stop questioning until you are satisfied. Who knows what the outcome may have been? At the very least a knock on the door and possible charges for any violations as a result... which basically means all my guns may have been carted out and me being in search of legal counsel.
