Hello shotgunners,

http://www.perrozdesigns.com/shop/equipment/detachable-shotgun-card/

The card in question is posted above. I purchased the two shot version because I thought it was a unique design, especially being able to be mounted on the right side. It was priced right, a Canadian company so I wanted to try it out. It was shipped quickly and came with some stickers which was nice.

I was able to mount it easily on my Mossberg 590 and hit the range.

Unfortunately this DSC did not live up to my expectations. After 5-7 shots of birdshot the shells would be so far up the elastic loops they could not even be grabbed. If the shells were brass down they would have fallen out. I tried mounting vertically and horizontally, both were ineffective.

The issue is that the backing material is not very thick and when rounds are loaded into the loops the backing drastically bends which means there is not enough tension on the shells. If shooting slugs or buckshot this would have been much worse.

I did email the maker about these issues as the product is "guaranteed" but have not yet received a response. I explained what the issue was and how it could be corrected, I will update if I receive a response from them.

So at this time I would not recommend the PerrozDesigns DSC. You are better off going with a more trusted S&J DSC.

I've come to realize all these elastic shell-card carriers are a bad idea, doesn't matter who makes em. I just don't like the design because they never quite work right imo.

I sort of agree with you. Great concept, but have some struggles. I would love to get my hand on a Vang Comp one to test that style. It looks super rigid.

I've tried all the various side saddles and have gone back to a belt mounted one like the California comp. It just seems easier than struggling to get them out of the sidesaddle one at a time. If they are held tightly enough to be securely retained, then they are a struggle to get out.

Yup, a belt and/or chest rig is much better imo.

I still like my Hoffner 6 round detatchable leather belt rig. Fast, rugged, excellent retention, and its even quick to recharge, unlike most shell rigs.

Unfortunately it seems to have been discontinued.

I have recently switched to a belt system. I really like this as recoil is not a factor and they seem very easy to access. As well I like that there is not extra weight on the shotgun which makes it easier to yield.

I have had similar results with this shell holder. Mine curled up badly too when loaded. I too contacted the maker...

I picked up the Raven/ARES moduloader and spare cards and couldn't be happier. Much stiffer backing and hardly any curl when loaded. The belt mount is solid and comfortable to use too.

I've used 3 or 4 different brands and the ARES hands down is the best.

Wow that Ares gear one actually looks very good. They did exactly what I did with my card, but better. I just designed a Velcro strap that would clip onto a belt and hold my card. It still wrinkles but since there is no recoil it was no problem. I looked everywhere to see if anyone sold anything of this nature but couldn't find it. But then there is this company that does exactly what I was looking for. A belt mount with Velcro. Pretty cool.

Never heard of this Huffier belt 870P. Did a basic search but came up with nothing. Sounds like it's pretty useful.

I ordered it from Hoffners.com, but as said I don't think they offer it anymore.

You can see it on some on some of Brian Hoffner's Youtube clips.

Interesting rig. Have to keep an eye out for something used.

You could try phoning them to see if they're still available from the supplier, but failing that I've seen similar rigs available elsewhere.

^^^

Just to be clear, those are just pictures I found on ebay.

They are fairly similar to the one I have aside from not being pre-curved to fit a belt.

I don't want to post the links as they're not made by a site sponsor.

It is similar to one I use for Cowboy action shooting. Although mine are in groups of 2 shells for grabbing a pair at a time for a double barrel. It also has loops for 6 45 colt shells. I got it from Cowboy Action leather, and they will customize anything you want. What I like about this one is it has a narrow strip of leather below the loops that the shell sits on so it is held high in the holder and can't slide down. I have another one on order right now, and am very pleased with the quality

I personally have not used the S&J. I have seen people use it. It does have a thicker backing so less flex, better retention. Now I have not fired 40 rounds of buckshot to see how the rounds hold up so that I can not speak to. I have seen 9 rounds of birdshot fired through a gun with no major sliding of the rounds.

There are lot's of leather shotshell rigs out there like that one. They are quite popular in Cowboy Action Shooting. Check out El Paso Saddlery,
Kirkpatrick Leather, Circle K Leather or Ted Blocker Holsters. They are all decent belt carry options.

Myself I'm done with the elastic loops. I've tried enough, including the Ares which are well built but I determined through trial they aren't as fast to reload from when mounted to a receiver compared to a rigid receiver mounted shell holder. The quicker you try to move shells out of the elastic loops the more the shell moves around...making for a slower reload.

Desbiens Gunleather offered a decent looking leather shotshell rig. It's like the leather ones above but holds 10 shells I recall correctly. I don't see them on their website but they had pics of it on their FB page.
