Well wen I started out on my first casting endeavor the hunt for lead was very discouraging to say the least. Lots of places I called had all sorts of reasons for not giving me the wheel weights. Some said they sell it for Christmas party money, but refused to sell it to me. I even offered them $.05 above current scrap prices.

Some people looked like deer caught in the headlights when i asked what they do with their old scrap weights.

Well I persisted and conquered.

Current count I have 175.75lbs in bars and another 1/3 of a bucket of lead weights to melt down.

Just got a callback and am picking up 65 lbs of lead bar for the price of $35

I currently have 3 garages saving their lead for me and am waiting to hear back from my hydro buddy about a possible 100 lbs of lead sheath.

So to all the newbies, dont get discouraged and keep plugging away. My goal for this year has now gone to 300 lbs of processed lead by the end of the year
 
I had the same problem but like you persisted and it's worked out quite well.
There's a local scrap yard I buy from if I just want a couple lbs to play with.
 
I went out last weekend to look for WW. The first four garages I went to had the same story:

"...Honest to god... we had a guy in here about an hour ago that took all of them..."

which one of you bastards was it! lol
 
I don't know....I just keep stopping places and asking....

The pure lead off a guy on kijiji looking to get rid of some scrape metal....happens he works for a lead foundry :)

Just secured over two more pails of ww.....got more lead coming in then I have money to pay for it all. :(

Have to pick up two buckets end of month from my regulars.

I'm just getting into the casting game myself and don't have to ask any questions, just keep reading in this forum.

I found a small garage away from the main roads where the owner is still the mechanic..he does a lot of tire changes and I had him do a few things on my car..paid him cash and gave a good tip...I have all the wheel weights I want. Just scored 129 lbs of ingots for 40$...i'll be going again soon sometime mid may when all the tire changes are done.

You got tin too?. .. Count yer blessings !.

.375 and .44 gc's, are all that I currently have in stock.

That, and many hundreds of pounds of raw WW at hand, that are needing to be either harder (for the .30 and 9.3 cal. rifle), or dead soft (for antique revolver). Harder is easy, add some shot, and quench it. Soft?... thats not so easy.
After months of fruitless searching, recently aquired 100lbs of soft from a good guy fellow cgn member, at a fair price.
At 250 grains per tho, that lot will soon enough be gone. :yingyang:

i seem to have better luck getting soft lead vs hard, i've got 10lbs of 95/5 solder i got for $10/lb and got a free 5lb pewter bowl! also have a 25 lb bar of lino type to mess with. i just need to get around town with some cash and get ideally 1000lbs of wheel weights and make a day of ingot making.
 
My friend has a large collection of scrap tin soldiers. Although they have lead in them they have a very high tin content.

The bullets he cast with just melted soldiers is what spurred the search for pure lead.

My next effort will be to get some pewter, its either that or buy antimony for going prices.

There is a lead company near me that sells pure lead at market price of 1.90/lb plus tax.

I'm sure if we buy 10 or more tonnes we will get a cheaper price ;)
 
Last year I was doing some work on my car and while having smoke outside I noticed quite a few WW just banging around dirt near curbs.

I returned there next day with bucket and picked up nearly 20lb of WW.

I go there every once in a while :)

Moral of the story-look near curbs by auto/tire shops.

assuming zero lead lost during casting; 15,217 bullets 230gr 45acp, 28225 bullets 124gr 9mm.

(7000gr per pound) and only 5000 bullets 700gr 500mag.
