Hi guys, I have a newer Wingmaster that is having trouble feeding shells into the chamber on the forestroke. The front of the shell tends to get caught up on the bottom of the barrel. I have looked around but haven't been able to find anyone else who has experienced this problem.

I am using an express vent rib barrel so I can switch chokes. Barrel nut is tight, and gun is clean. This problem occurs with all the shells I have used, from 3" Remington slugs, to 2-3/4" Winchester target loads (approx. 1 in 5 shots).

Has anyone else experienced a similar problem?

Does it work with the proper barrel? If its a newer wingmaster I'd assume it would have a vent rib and chokes. So it can't be that new.

I left the original barrel at home (I'm away for work) as I shoot a lot of steel shot and didn't want to ruin it. It is a full fixed choke... and i'm not exactly sure about its age, I bought it from a fellow CGN'er.

I will compare the barrels next time I visit.

You say it is clean, have you removed the trigger assembly and confirmed that there is no crud stopping the shell carrier from lifting the new round high enough? looks like the new round is not coming up enough.

I'd take a barrel mop, wrap it lightly with 000 steel wool and a bit of Brasso, and stick the base of the mop in a drill.
Spin the "polishing mop" around the receiver and the chamber, and polish the feeding path areas of the shotgun.
When you've polished everything you'll have far less friction and your gun will cycle and feed much more smoothly.
Did that procedure with my 870 many years ago, and it's always worked beautifully.
Your issue looks mechanical though, I don't know the exact term for it, but the feeding ramp doesn't seem to be lifting
the shell high enough when you cycle the action. It needs to be adjusted...bent to it's proper configuration.

Do all of the above. I have run an Express Barrel on a Wing for years. As my trigger mech was clean, I need to polish the chamber. Either a 10 ga brush, or 12 ga with a bit of 000 steel wool in a drill. Solved all my issues. On the other note, you can run a full choke with steel, just not bigger than BB.... I run B, 1, and 2's all the time...

Trigger assembly was last cleaned ~250 shells ago, but I'll give it a good cleaning before I head out next time. I'm not sure polishing will help as the shell gets caught up on the small flat that runs around the chamber, it seems to get pinched end to end between the bolt and the barrel. Pisces and iceman are right, it seems as though the shell isn't being lifted far enough.

If all else fails I'll tweak the flipper a little bit and see how things go.

Thanks!

Sounds like an issue with the lifter. Could you push on it (the lifter) forcing it to raise the next round a tad bit higher and lining up with the feeding path. Your pic looks like the shells arent going high enough. Maybe something in the trigger group got bent.

I have an 870 express that gave me a little grief like this. What was going on was the flipper arm has a tab that is bent upwards, nearest to the ejection port, it was just a smidgen bent too much outwards and would hang up on the forestroke as the incoming shell wouldn't be lifted high enough to feed properly. Bending he little tab inwards a little more has made it feed perfectly now.

I have no problems running express barrels on my wingmasters. I would try the old barrel first and if it is OK do the old polishing on the express barrel as the boys say. If it has problems with the old barrel also then tweek the carrier/ lifter as 1965bjs and others here indicate but very little at a time.

Alright so I got a hold of the original barrel and threw it in for 50 or so rounds. Same problem. I want to tweak the lifter but don't want to make the problem worse.

For those of you that have already done this, where along the lifter did you bend? Can I fix this by replacing a spring instead of permanently modifying my rifle?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Mitch
