Can I legally shoot pests (coyotes going after my friend's horses) on a Sunday in Alberta? The WMU isn't in the Sunday hunting-friendly list, but it's not really hunting, right?

here in ontario it is hunting. are you a farmer protecting livestock? that's o.k.i think it would depend on the situation. if your 50 ' from a horse with a gun and the coyote is 50 ' the other side of the horse that's one thing. if the horse is in a corrall grazing away, and your 1/2 mile away in the bush with a gun, you might have some explaining to do if a c.o. shows up.

Hmmm..I'm missing something here. I have horses and coyotes (hundreds). Never seen a coyote take after a horse yet. My neighbour raises ranch horses, she's never had a problem either. Newborn calves maybe.

It's legal to shoot coyotes on Sunday. Section 32(1) of the wildlife act states that "No person shall hunt any big game or game birds on Sunday."

Coyotes, by definition in the wildlife act, are fur-bearing animals.

here you go...

Access for Control of Livestock Predation
Black Bear and Coyote*
Any person who is (a) the owner or occupant of privately owned land, or (b) authorized to keep livestock on public land, or (c) a resident authorized by a person described in (a) or a resident authorized in writing by a person described in (b) may, without a licence, hunt (but not trap) black bear or coyote on such lands, at all times of the year.

Coyote
A Resident may, without a licence and on land to which he or she has the right of access, hunt (but not trap) coyote at all times of the year throughout the province, except as follows:
1) on public lands in the Green Area, only from October 1, 2007 to February 28, 2008, and
2) in Camp Wainwright (WMUs 728 and 730), only from December 17, 2007 to February 28, 2008.

Alberta really is the most hunter friendly province isn't it? Can shoot anything on the list of pests any time of the year. Hunting season starts August 25th and ends July 15th. Sure you have to fill in some cougar and wolf hunting in between the end of November and March but at least cougar is open for a good part of that. Each year you could probably get 13 big game tags, with what 7 of them being white tail? I lost track of the total number a long time ago, but it's enough to keep a persons plate filled with 50lbs of meat every night of the year lol

So what's the point here? I'm seeing a guy who looking for an excuse to hunt 'yotes on Sunday and is willing to bull#### about it to the point where he's saying the 'yotes are attacking horses. Well. I happen to know that this is absolute f'n BS. Look if you want to hunt 'yotes or whatever on sunday, check the regs, do it legally but don't come on here looking for absolution telling me that the 'yotes are endangering horses OK. Horses, mules and donkeys will drive off horses and kick the crap out of them....don't try this BS on me. I've got a herd of 30+ horses around home and a healthry population of 'yotes that say otherwise. I do hunt "yotes myself, but not under some lame excuse, period.

For the record I have seen coyotes chase a horse, my stepsister was on it!! One of the farms I hunt on lost a 7 year old pony 2 years ago. I watched a coyote check out a fence traped horse to see if it was easy pray. Calves are common food for them here as are sheep etc. Coyotes will kill anything they think they can,or at least try. & yes u can shoot coyotes on sunday. AJ

Well, I've heard of coyotes in N.S. running down a horse but I've certainly never seen it. Coyotes will eat anything they can without risking their hide, so healthy horses are right out as they will drive off a black bear with little fuss. If you were riding a lame horse through a valley in the middle of winter with no other source of food within 100 miles for coyotes you might be harassed by them but only if you weren't packing a rifle to scare them off with.

Calves and sheep are different as the only risk to a coyote from attacking them is an angry farmer. Though I've seen cattle out on crown land act extremely aggressive towards potential predators that get too close to the herd.

Been a horseman all my life---that said I would never say coyotes would never bother a horse. They will if they're taught. I had a young indian lad from the Sarcee reserve(can't spell new name) that was having all kinds of problems with his brood mares. Seems the coyotes were killing the foals as the mare was down foaling. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't say it hasn't happened. All he wanted to know was can he kill a coyote on sunday thats giving his friends pony some grief.---Cowboy

wow.

do you have any reason to believe i am lying to you? simply because you have never seen it does not mean it doesn't happen.

everybody else, thank for the input.

and sorry, I should have looked up the regs myself. i never meant to be the cause of someone's heart attack
