hey Gents,
a few people have been hitting me up about some pet food, not mince but cubed up meat........

whats ya thoughts on price per KG of cubed venison for these people?

its an interesting one, as i have a far idea of what beef, lamb, chiken etc is worth per kg, but this is a bit different, supply and demand perhaps? but what would you say is a fair price?

im not out to get rich... just help a few out but make a few profits off the deers at present?

let me know!
thanks

- the knackery is taking deer at $2 per kg gutted , hide on, head off all that jazz...... then they do what they do with them... commercial harvest-

i have a price, whats yours?

No idea on cost, but I'll say this: We feed our dogs commercial raw dog food (beef, chicken etc) and if I give them moose or deer trimmings they still get the craps in the worst way. So I dont let them pick the trimmings up because I dont want dog diarrhea all over the place

My two cents.
find out how much pet food cost in your neck of the woods.
charge about 80% of it. less if it's a friend.

I was feeding my dog (Shepard, lab mix) about 50% cheep Superstore dog food and 50% raw deer from my harvest and all my hunting friends scrap. Never an issue. He lived a good and long life.

Yeah, this seems a pretty good way to put the picture together.

Was in London a couple years back and ground Venison was ~30 pounds a Kilo there. Told my wife I need a new lock for the freezer! :)

I don't generally have enough around to keep the dog on it, so they live on dry food and the odd treat.

Figure out how much you can get beef for and add 20-25% more for venison, it’s worth more as it’s harder to get. I used to buy raw wild meat for my dog and it was more expensive than beef, chicken or lamb.

farm raised, quality beef in the cariboo region is selling for near 6.00 a pound for ground, direct from the butcher.

I figure venison is worth 20.00 a pound if you hunted it.
But as was said earlier, selling game meat is illegal.

feeding it to your dogs is also illegal. I actually know a BC hunter who's home was inspected after someone reported he was hunting deer for dog food. He lost all his meat and hunting privledges for 5 years (?). I'll ask him when I see him next.
He didn't even eat deer but loves hunting and saw nothing wrong with using his tags for dog food. Apparently the CO's did not agree.

Very interesting. I wonder what specific offense he was charged with.

i did some checkin out on the pet mince an pet meat sales goin on round the place and found a reasonable price to keep this deel sorted.

happy days on the veno for pet food here, an the dawgs love it.. as much as they can get , they will take. ha ha!

slightly different rules regarding the 'game' down here,

wasting game meat.
Our tags allow us to hunt for human consumption. Anything else is not allowed.
Trim scraps and bones are one thing but the edible portions are for humans.
but don't take my word for it, call your local CO's office and make your own enquiries.

There are game farms in Canada that you can order meat from to make your own natural pet food.
Ranchers can also be a source for livestock meat for natural pet food such as chicken, buffalo, beef ect.

Sarcasm? If not the short answer is no. The longer answer is that is a great way to have your dog killed. Not many conservation officers will tolerate dogs at large pursuing game.

Good answer. Rural dogs that are found to be pulling down animals live short lives...as they should.
Totally owning up to being a crochety old man here, but... if you are hunting deer in Canada for pet food, you should be relieved of your right to hunt for about 5 years. It's a dyck move IMO.
If you want to retort in oppostion to it, you are welcome to... but it's still a dyck move. Most CO's would write you up in a heartbeat. SIL is one, good guy and a straight shooter too

I’m surprised nobody’s head has exploded yet. Shooting meat for dog food is a very real thing in Oz, but depending where and what the licensing and certification requirements for selling it can be rather prohibitive.

A lot of the non-native species get treated pretty close to being vermin, no?

Or, maybe you can explain.

I have seen comments to the effect that in some of the American Southern States, the limit on deer is one a day.

Around here, in British Columbia, you get two, maybe three deer, annually, unless you go out to the Queen Charlotte's Islands, where they are a bit smaller, and they sell tags for them in books of ten.

What's the deal on Oz?

Seems to me they encourage the shooting of just about, anything including feral horses.

...in your opinion.

I shoot a deer every year here at home, and it is always fully utilized. But most years, I have some other hunt set up as well, and if successful...whether it be elk, moose, caribou, antelope, whatever...I invariably prefer that meat to deer. The venison is still eaten...by my dog. It's not wasted, and since I make my own dog food I will be using some kind of meat in any case, so how can that be considered wasteful? Are you suggesting I should give the venison away, and then buy meat for the dog? That's not a dyck move...but it would be a stupid and wasteful one...

Just one crotchety old man to another...:)

I think it would be considered wasted by F&W if ate none of it and let the dog have the majority of it.
