I’m exceeding published loads by several grains (obviously) but can do so safely as my rifle has a long throat and I can seat the bullet out substantially, effectively increasing case capacity beyond SAAMI specs for 44Rem. This is no different than increasing case capacity in the “AI” wildcats or the .458 Lott, etc. The .357Max is another example. Im just taking advantage of how my rifle came from the factory, and is one of the reasons I like single shot rifles. Magazine-fed rifles are very frequently limited by the length of the magazine box. Traditions has a very generous throat length and so I can just take advantage of that.I couldn't get near that velocity with published loads im sure but I couldn't get a lipstick bullet to stay together.
I agree. I shot them into water filled jugs at 25 yards and the 225gr factory load and the 265gr reloads both came apart. The xtp did not. I also shot the cheap 240gr bronze factory ammo into the water and it did not preform as well as the xtp. I haven't tried the 300gr xtp yet as I figured I couldn't get the velocities I wantedI’m exceeding published loads by several grains (obviously) but can do so safely as my rifle has a long throat and I can seat the bullet out substantially, effectively increasing case capacity beyond SAAMI specs for 44Rem. It’s interesting that you experience failures of the FTX bullets you’ve tried, (if I understand correctly), as the .429 cal 265gr FTX is designed for the 444 Marlin and a minimum expansion velocity of 1300fps. That’s why I’m shooting them so fast in my 44mag; I need them to be able to expand out to about 175yds (my planned maximum distance with a 125yd zero). I’m guessing the lighter 44cal bullets are designed to expand at pistol velocities.
I agree. I
Interesting about your experience with the 265 FTX performing poorly as well; not what I would have expected. When I was much younger I owned a 444 and loaded it exclusively with Hornady’s 265 flat points, which always performed flawlessly on deer. Perfect mushrooms: I still have one of them retrieved from a whitetail shot at about 15 yards, quartering front to back, bullet launched at 2200fps and retrieved under the hide of the back opposite ham. It expanded almost 100% diameter and weighs 258gr. It lost one of its jacket pedals, attributing to the -7gr net weight.shot them into water filled jugs at 25 yards and the 225gr factory load and the 265gr reloads both came apart. The xtp did not.
