Did some cooking today to reduce my pewter stash into ingot form. This melt is 10 lbs worth, which should be good for about 300-350 lbs of lead.....:)


Not sure why the different colours in the ingots, maybe the heat got too high in this small pot,
but anyway it's all good.

It was fun & just got done before the rain...w:h:
 
Different could come from melting pewter with different mixes of tin and other metals in it. I have pewter that is dull and some that is bright here.
 
Any day cooking lead is a good day - thanks for sharing.

I've seen that golden hue come from lead (from the same batch) that was heated much hotter than the shinier ingots.
 
I don't even have to go scrounging around for it. My sister haunts all the local thift/junk stores & buys it. So far this 10 lbs cost me a total of $50. That's not bad considering foundry tin is about $22./lb. + shipping & there is a minimum weight to purchase. She just called & picked up a bit more.....:bigHug:

so that's why I can't find any around here in the junk shops
 
I have melted down more than a few lbs of pewter in my casting career. Have noticed the same variation in colour. Everything from bright shiny silver to an almost gold colour with large crystal structure. I think it is related to temperature. The higher the temp at pouring the more gold the colour.
I've also noted pewter ingots weigh about 50% of what the same size ingot of wheel weights weigh.
 
Very nice stash. The different color comes usually from the alloy the trinket was made out of. But heat also have a say in it. It won't matter anyway as soon you drop it into a pot full of lead. That amount of pewter should last you for quite a while.

I am squirrelling away pewter from thrift stores for when I start casting and average at about $3.5 per lb.
Wish I had a sister who would do the hard work for me...takes quite a bit of time checking out the thrift stores.

Had more luck a few weeks ago when I ran into these two giant ingots at my local scrap yard

125 lbs of 15/85 alloy so contains almost 19 lbs of tin :)
The best part; they charged me lead price only.
