Pheasant hunting with a 20 ga.

Hi, I’m new here but I’ve learned a lot from you guys, thanks.

I love hunting pheasants with my Lab. I’m using a Browning O&U 20 ga. My Lab often puts the birds up just with a reasonable range so I’ve been using a 3” copper plated number 6s. They sure are expensive.

So my questions are: I’m I going overboard with theses shells?

Would I be advised to go with 2 3/4 in 6s?

I look forward to your advice.
 
I shot pheasant this fall with 20ga, 2 3/4", #6, plain old Federal upland loads.

I've never had a 3" chambered 20 guage, and I've done fine..

From what I understand the 3" 20 is a overrated, over pressure, no gains sort of thing...

I switched to Kent Fast steel 3" 20 bore with #3 steel shot to hunt stateland in South Dakota. It was incredible long shots no problem. Kent shells are of great quality and the price is around 20.00 a box. Not bad compared to premium lead loads. I used the same gun/load combo in Manitoba for ducks and sharptails and it performed well there too. I even knocked down some Canadas (honkers) with those loads.

Love them Super-X "Double X " copper-plated 6's in 2-3/4.
Even at 75 cents a piece, they're a bargain.
Pattern great & kill at long range. ( Holdover from my
old waterfowling favourites in 12 ga. - they worked great too ! )
