Just stumbled on this and have to say that to my eyes this is one of the pretties doubles.

It's nice to see Westley Richards is still making fine guns. So many of the old English gunmakers have gone under.

Being a purist, I would have preferred a rimmed cartridge in a double rifle, especially in a large bore intended for dangerous game. The .500 Jeffery is not only rimless, it has a rebated rim, which in my mind would even more complicate the business of extraction and ejection.

It's also interesting that this rifle is actually a boxlock with falsies; false sideplates. Done, no doubt, for the sake of the engraving. Again, being a purist, I prefer boxlocks to look like boxlocks. But the detachable lock system of Westley Richards is probably the best.

If I was ordering a double rifle from Westley Richards, I would have to insist on a rimmed cartridge and no fake sideplates. Quality boxlocks have nothing to be ashamed of and the money involved is too much for something that isn't quite right.
