Pic vs Keymod: should i switch?

Not so fast - Picatinny is dying. And good riddance - it was a bad rip-off of Weaver to begin with. STANAG 4694 NATO Accessory Rail (NAR) superseded Picatinny in 2009 for military weapons. They only need to be backward compatible for a few more years and 1913 accessories/mounts will start to die off. Any new bids for weapons or accessories will require NAR to be compliant. That means they need to have an interface more like weaver and sit solidly on the top of the rail, but with wider slots about the same with as pic on the same centres. Also much tighter tolerances required since pic was proven to not be repeatable or retain zero under rough handling.

H&K, B&T, Colt Canada etc are already compliant and have started delivering.

Good to know. Shows how much I pay attention to this stuff...

What are your thoughts on M-loc et al?
My thinking is that for ARs and other black rifle accessories it will need to have military / police acceptance for it to have a hope of continued life.

I don't know why most civilians even bother. They don't use the rails anyways and put stuff on there that is overkill. Im the only person I know that adds lasers and lights to my guns.

Because most people like to play pretend by adding lights and lasers to their rifles, civi and non. Considering we're talking AR's here, the number of members on this board who are actually utilizing those things properly at a range are very very few.

OP figure out the weight savings and then decide if the cost is worth it. I'm glad my XCR was keymod, but only because I ran nothing but a bipod on it. Even then, it required a rather expensive rail section to covert to picatinny.

that is what im working on, the cost - any thoughts on a fair price for a basically brand spanking new DD RISII M4A1 rail in FDE?

key mod , mlok will be the 40 S&W of the rail systems..\people will go deep and long, then 15yrs from now winder why they even botherd.
That said a slim for end is for sure the way to go.

Adding a light isn't an option it is necessary if your rifle is to be used for defensive(or offensive) work. If you attend training courses or even compete, a low/no light element is quite common. Lasers are far less useful but are necessary for certain roles. Think pig hunting in the US with NOD's.

Mlok is the way to go. Unless you like the look of little #####es all down the side of your gun. Check out the first 4 mins of this vid:

I ran 1913 pic for years. Just got first keymod in the form of KAC SR15E3 mod 2. Vast difference is weight and size. Mounting on keymod is rock solid as is pic. But the streamlined keymod in my opinion is the way to go.

Since you asked me ;), Picatinny all the way! I love the chunky feel and it's a simple one piece design.

Also, I have visions of somehow wedging my pinky in a keymod hole and ripping it off.

Picatinny is a simple, mostly useless and heavy design... Sounds like a great choice.

I really like my keymod xcr because it is light, thin, and modular. I am, however, not impressed that my Midwest industries rail section comes loose after every shoot despite Locktite and elbow grease...

If I had a pic rail I probably wouldn't pony up the cash to switch. But if you were looking at a new gun I would probably get keymod.

Which picatinny rail you running that is "one piece"?

Any free float handguard I suppose.

What I meant specifically was, I prefer not attaching a second piece (the railed section) to the keymod hand guard, then connecting to that with say, a vertical grip.
I just like the heavy (and yes, mostly useless ;)) old school picatinny handguard for it's simplicity.

Did you torque it to 20 or 30ft/lbs? Is the MI rail section plastic or aluminum?

You do know that they make direct attach accessories for both Keymod and MLok? Picatinny is dead, direct attach is the smarter and lighter way to do business.
