Picatinny Rail for Browning FN Mauser Action?

My Browning FN has a Shilen 6mm Rem barrel, the only serial number I see on it is on the bottom of the bolt handle, in the form 116xx. Looks like a Safari to me but there is no letter or year prefix.

Post http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=45075 has what looks to be the same action.

I modified a Weaver 49A base for the front, the 45 base fit perfectly on the rear. I milled down the 49A flat bottom base using a sanding drum on a drill press & files, with a machinist square to check alignment. It's not perfect but it is reasonably close and I have been happy with it up to now.

I just got a new Nightforce scope, which bolted on very well, but I had to crank in some up elevation to zero it. I'd like to replace the Weaver bases with a one-piece Picatinny type rail. Does somebody make one that will fit this action?

I'm a bit confused regarding the large ring / small ring variations in the Mauser actions, as applied to the Browning FN models. Can you tell from the pictures if this is a small ring?

Thanks,
Eric

Try Ken Farrell, I was just on his site and he lists a few different 98 bases.

Hi Leg, don't know if mine is a 98 Mauser or an FN Mauser. Reading the various webpages, they apparently used a couple of different actions over the years.

I got a Near Mfg FN 98 20MOA M1913 Rail 1PC scope mount on mine....

Robert, is yours an FN Browning like this one? I'm concerned the small ring / large ring Mauser thing could be a problem. At least I'm pretty sure it's not a Sako action :p

looking for a steel base or a aluminium one?

I think I'd probably prefer steel, but depends how strong the aluminum base is. I'd like to get my hands on one, it's easier to judge that way for me.

Thanks for your replies,
Eric

Near Mfg said they have 2 different 1pc scope mount for FN mauser, Why I said try them, becuase they shipped me the mount to see if it would fit, before I had to send any money...

All I know it mines a FN mauser 98..

Ken Farrell lists bases for the 98 and FN Mauser, even has a listing for a Yugo 48, all are basically the same action. I couldn't tell you what minute details are different on each one.

If your 98 is a Browning than it's probably an FN Mauser, but this is just an educated guess.

I'm going to quote Hungry here : If you don't get parachuted over Asscrakistan, then Aluminium will be fine. EGW is the cheapest Contact them for details..... you'll like it.

Sorry, who is EGW? I'm pretty new here.

I took the scope off to confirm the bases, the rear is a Weaver #45, from the package it states it is for large ring / FN Mausers, 1.410" approx. diameter. On the front a Weaver #55 fits perfectly except for the hole spacing - height lines up with the #45, and matches the curve of the receiver. This is what I used as a template to file down the #49A to fit.

I quickly measured the hole spacing, from the rear hole it is roughly:
1-2 0.50"
1-3 4.02"
1-4 4.79"

From Ken Farrell's site, for FN Mauser, 1st to 2nd hole - .50 1st to 3rd hole - 4.33 1st to 4th hole - 5.19 It doesn't look like there's a fit.

Maybe it's time to find a gunsmith to look at it.

The gunsmith is the best bet, He migtht get a base not drilled yet and customize it for you. EGW is the company in the US that makes the bases. They are not a sponsor of CGN so I will not post the link.. any search engine would be of great help.... call them and...

+1 for Farrell. Ken's a great guy and he'll be able to tell you exactly what you need. Call and ask to speak to him, if it's not him that answers the phone!
