picatinny rail on an undrilled savage 340 - how would you mount it?

Hey ya'll.

I've got an old beater of a Savage 340 in 30-30. One of the older ones that came drilled for a peep sight, but not for a scope mount.

I'm quite fond of the little gun and think with a little work it would be a enough of a scout type rifle to keep me from buying a Ruger Gunsite.

Thinking it would be fun to mount a picatinny rail on it in a forward mount position. Looking for suggestions on how to do this as inexpensively as possible.

I've read that drilling the case hardened receiver is difficult. Was quoted $30 a hole by a local smith. (when I was looking at using the standard scope mount)

Looked at the barrel clamp style scout scope mount as a cheap option but wondering if that would have a negative effect on the accuracy.
The stock is a bit of a mess so cutting into to clear the barrel clamp isn't a much of a worry.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Not if you reload. You would just need to work up a new load to match the new barrel harmonics. We should actually call it "fun up a new load" since I don't think there is any work involved.

That XS two part epoxy forward scout scope mount would be pretty sweet for that, I like your idea for using that 340, they're not worth much and the side mount piece, is kind of a piece of crap. a buddy has one and it's great in that it's small, light nimble and has the drop mag.

google search xs picatinny enfield and you will see a bunch of these done.

Epoxy scope mount? Why didn't you tell your buddy about this before? He would have been way happier trying that than waiting for that overpriced gunsmith to get off his ass and do some work. ;)

Jeebus christmas, I didn't realize it was you on here. Have a look around for scout scopes, I'm happy with that aim sport on the enfield but it's far to low in quality for most of the others around here, problem is most of the long eye relief scopes start around $400+ which can get you alot of scope in a redfield or a nikon or sightron etc.

Maybe bring the thing over on the weekend and we'll check the barrel profile as compared to the enfield.

Either of them will probably do, I don't have a mauser anymore but if my memory is correct that savage barrel is a slimmer profile then most bolt actions.

The only thing you probably want to think about is leaving enough room to get at the barrel nut should someone one day want to swap the barrel to .222 or .223.

Took some measurements on friday, I think he's gonna sell the rifle as is though, similar to me, too many irons in the fire.

Still working on this.

The XS scope mounts weren't quite the right size/profile, so going the cheaper route and ordered a barrel clamp pic rail via Amazon.
I've refinished the stock so it's not so fugly anymore.

Pics soon.

More to it than just a barrel.
Bolt is different, so is the magazine.

Not sure I'm understanding you, you do know were talking about a picatinny as per the copied picture, not sure how this picatinny mount would be affected by the magazine or bolt, it's just epoxied to the barrel.

Ian, what are the barrel clamps you found on amazon?
