Has anyone found a gun that likes thunderbolts?

I picked up 2 bricks a few months back on sale for $9.99 per brick. I haven't tried any of them in anything yet.

I know several of my guns say specifically NOT to use it in them (Glock 22lr kit had a big orange paper inside the box that said "DO NOT USE STINGERS OR THUNDERBOLTS")

Stingers have a longer case and are higher velocity so it's a pressure / chamber concern.

Thunderbolts are actually higher velocity than most high velocity 22LR so it is probably the same thing. They are also terrible like most Remington 22LR ammo.

For plinking with a 10/22 and SU-22 I use mainly Federal bulk as it has been reliable for me and is cheap. For my GSG and Glock 17 with AA 22 conversion I run Remington Golden Bucket. Minimags also worked perfectly with those, but the Remington is cheaper. I had tried Federal bulk, CCI Blazer and a few AE variations and all had trouble with cycling and FTE. I thought it might be a velocity issue so I ran a small sample set across a chronograph (results below). Speeds were similar so it was something else.

I recently had to send my M&P22 in for repairs after shooting a few mags of Sellier and Bellot "SB", which kind of looks like a wad cutter, with a flat nose that the feed ramp didn't like. They broke the ejector right off. Covered by warranty at least.

I was told to stick to CCI or Federal by the warranty shop (Murray Charleton). My latest buy was 1K of CCI Minimags, copper plated round nose.

In general, I've shot a variety of jacketed and pure lead, round nose and a few hollow points, without problems. It was the flat headed SB rounds that wouldn't ride the feed ramp, but it's quite a steep angle in an M&P. I haven't seen a PPQ's, but you probably can't go wrong with round nose, preferably jacketed.

Partly true...

But I own a dozen .22s (ok, maybe more than a dozen, but that's all I'm going to admit to), and outside of match grade ammo, there is a clear winner in terms of which brand will most consistently out-perform all the others.

And its CCI.

I've run various flavours of a dozen different brands, through a number of different rifles and 22 pistols. And like most people in my position, I ended up giving up on buying anything other than CCI unless I'm desperate. It isn't worth the bother when 9 times out of 10, CCI will be the ammo that works best in your gun. And on the 10th time, it'll be second best, and by such a slim margin that it hardly counts.
 
I did t mean to upset anyone! I just mean this thread will receive almost every kind of ammo made... I must admit I have NEVER tried Thunderbilts though..

It is true that CCI is making fantastic ammo. But I have lots of various brands of ammo I prefer in different guns. So I just meant to buy lots and try it all out!

That's the trick, try all you can find/afford. And the great thing about rimfire is that it won't break the bank, even if you have to stretch it out over a few weeks. Even tho I have my favs, I still try new things once in a while. I remember about 20-25 years ago finding steel cased l.r. in a gun store. It was made in russia or one of the soviet bloc countries I think, and acted/sounded like sub-sonic altho I can't remember what the box said now. I used to have some miss-fires from the hard cases but I found it really accurate. I only bought a brick and it was cheap even then. Went back a month or so after and it was all gone...wish I'd bought it all lol

Oh. not offended at all, and I have scads of various makes/varieties of .22 kicking around.

Part of it depends on how accurate I need to be. If I'm just practising off-hand shooting at 25 yards, picking off pop tins... Pretty much any make will do, so I'll go with whatever's cheapest.

Also, I have a couple of rifles that it doesn't matter what you put in them, the groups are tight enough for gophers ell past 50 yards.

Part of the fun is, of course, buying a box or two of whatever and just trying it out.

In general though, we all have our "default go to" ammo.
 
And don't be too quick to give up on a certain ammo.

On some .22's they have to settle in when switching brands. Clean barrel, foul with a few shots and then start your test.

And yet my 10/22 works flawlessly with all of those. I think it depends on the individual gun
 
I've tried just about every brand available in Winnipeg, CCI is my #1 choice, followed by Federal and WildCat. Remington is at the bottom of the list (15% of them seem to be duds ). Luckily I have a Gevarm that eats anything, so at the end of the day I just have a couple of duds instead of a 100.

I agree and have had the same results. It does depend what you are cycling the rounds in. In a 10-22 if you want a cheap round that is reliable I have yet to find one better then American Eagle 40 grain SP. CCI stuff is even better but is a little pricey. If you are using a bolt almost anything will cycle and feed but I have found I get the occasional wild round with everything except american eagle and CCI.
