Pick a cartridge.

Ah Hell! Get yourself a .375HH and be done with it;) (grnhawg now ducks down the hole to miss the flames that will inevitably fly)
Jokeing aside the Swede would be near top of my list given the criteria. The Roberts that has had some fine reviews here lately would be another. That .260 would do all required as well and so would a 25/06. Reckon it would end up boiling down to the gun that fit up right when you threw it to your shoulder in any of those chamberings to recieve the nod.
Only ever shot one deer with a .308 but I do remember thinking as I was cleaning up that that much gun wasn't really required. Bullet killed that deer and went looking for another one. Mind you it was a 180 partition and not exactly the ideal deer bullet. Either way if i was to make a .30 choice the /06 would be first over the .308. Takeing a deer type bullet say 150 gr., old /06 will make the delivery a bit flatter and therefore harder. That said the other reason for that choice would be that my custom bolt /06 is way better gun than my lever Win 88 in .308. See, it still boils down to the gun that works for you;)

Thanks for the reply's guys, but I really meant .270 to '06. I've got a 25-06 for the lil'un and a .300 win mag for the big, long range jobs. I'm just looking for an intermediate cartridge that would be fun to take to the range, and a pleasure to hunt with. Oh, and I do have a .303 or two kicking around here. :D

Hmm...30-06 is way to close to a .300 WM. I'm going to have to change my alleged mind and say a short action, either 7-08 or .308.
BTW neither of these are "intermediate"

A "LOT" of range time?

.35 Whelen... centerfire rifle shooting doesn't get much cheaper than the .35 calibers. And it will knock down anything on this continent quite nicely

If you're serious about the 'general' part of general purpose, then it's the .30-06. Find a 180 grain load you like (there's even a couple at 2900 fps...) and you're set for all of North America.

If you mean 'mostly deer', then the .260 Rem and 7mm-08 (or the originals: 6.5x55 SE and 7x57 Mauser) can't be beat.
Best answer yet! :)
