I bought the above gun, a No. 1 in .300 H&H, two months ago and still have not decided on a scope for it. I currently have my fiancee's 3-9x40 Nikon Buckmaster on it and she needs the scope back. I have decided a 40mm objective just feels a little big on the rifle because the No. 1 has such a slim stock. So I believe I want a compact scope.

My first thought was a VX-3 2.5-8x36, but it lacks eye relief and the eye relief changes greatly with magnification, which I detest. I need 4" of constant eye relief.

I also want to go with a ballistic reticle for this scope. Being a 300 magnum I figure I will use it more than I would on other rifles.

If there was a sub 40mm Conquest I would already have bought it as I love my Conquest on my .280.

I really like the Swarovski 3-9x36, but it only comes in a German or a plex reticle. It's also pushing the top of the price range.

Nikon makes a 2-8 Monarch with a reticle I like and it holds 4" of eye relief throughout the magnification range. The Monarch has good glass for the price, but there is a wee bit of distortion and chromatic aberration in the image that is a little bothersome. It's not out of the picture yet though.

Anyone know of a scope in the $500-$800 range that meets the above criteria. Yes I know I'm picky.

Vortex Diamondback 2-7x35 with the BDC reticule

The Vortex Diamondbacks are a great scope for the money, but they don't offer the optical quality I'm looking for on this rifle. I'm starting to lean towards getting a 3-9x36 Z3, and just forgeting about the ballistic reticle.

Forget the ballistic reticle. A 300 H&H with 180gr bullets will shoot flat enough that you won't have to worry about it to any range that you will be shooting game at.

Now your selection of potential scopes just got way bigger. Get the Zeiss and report back to the masses!
