The M1 was used in Korea & did fine in winter campaigns there or so I've heard. - I read about one battle during the winter, where the troopies were supplied with belted machine gun ammo so it had to be delinked & the soldiers had to crawl around on the ground desperately searching for empty en bloc clips, then fill them while under fire - talk about motivation! :p

I voted for the .303. Since I have zero chance of being called upon to storm the beaches of Normandy, I sort of imagined which I'd want to have if the world ended and the zombies invaded. The Lee Enfield will just keep working, the ten-round mag will keep me in the fight for a couple shots longer *but* I can still top it off easily, and it's a lot more portable than a belt-fed MG.

I would have tossed my Lee Enfield on the ground (if it could hit it :)) and picked up the closest Mauser.

At the end of the war a a soldier just returned, was singing the praises of the Lee Enfield. I was a young guy and I said I liked the American rifle. His reply was, "Not if you ever saw one you wouldn't!"
So, he quickly cut me down, but when I did see a Garand, I had to agree with him.

Lee Enfield all the way.

Garand too eager on the trigger and eat all your ammo.

Aim, pick your target, squeeze the trigger and kill it.

Maintaining fire superiority = MG42

Anything else is pure silliness in a firefight given the choice of these three weapons.
The only better option would have been the MP44. More maneuverable, quicker to reload, faster to displace with, and would still have put out enough lead to keep heads down and do damage out to 300 meters. But nooooo.....we had to get rid of that weapon dident we.:stirthepot2:

wonder when it gets to 300 is it worth whilw to take the top two and do a finall poll? Or woul;d it be hands down on the M1? Was hopeing for a tie.

Nah, I think the road ends here. M1 isn't gonna lose its place...

Still can't believe the LE is here... *Groan*

The LE is a sentimental favourite and a fine turn bolt rifle. The No4 LE was a product improvement on a reliable design dating back to the late 1800s. The Garand was a next generation infantry rifle which was superior by any objective comparison.

Thankfully the Brits had the foresight to adopt the BREN in the 1930s,otherwise the Commonwealth infantry would not have been in the game. It is interesting that both the Mauser armed Germans and Enfield armed Brit/Cdn/Aussie squaddies were ammo bearers for the MG34/42 and BREN, where the basis of firepower lay, while the individual American soldier was able to generate a high volume of fire with his own personal weapon. Too bad the US did'nt have a .30-06 BREN rather than the BAR. The BREN and Garand would have been a great combination.

I agree that the LE is one of finest bolt action rifles of all time.........

However by the time WW2 hit bolt action designs were obsolete!!

And so I'll sort it out once and for all, here are the most combat effective small arms of the war.

First place: MP44 - It started the assault rifle concept, it is the pinnacle of weapons development from that time and then some. If the krauts had been able to field it in massive numbers when it was ready (Hitler delayed it) things would have gotten very ugly indeed.

2nd place: MG42 - Another engineering masterpiece, the best MG ever made, period!! It is the definition of superior firepower and it is still in service!!

3rd place: M1 Garand. - One very fine dead reliable rifle and the first semi-automatic to be generally issued.

Thats it, the end.

Flame away if you must but fact is fact:evil:
