pick-up truck for hunting...... which?

Very few for sale in Ontario. (Toyota Tacoma)
The prices are so high, it's almost not worth buying a used one, compared to a new one.

I like them a lot, but I'd have to find the runner-up (domestic maybe), so I can actually afford to pay without "donating" a kidney.

Dakota quad cab seems nice too.... are they any good?

In the event a pick-up may just be a nice-to-have and you may not be hauling an ATV or deer sized or larger game.....then I would recommend a used 4 Runner, Pathfinder or even an early model Exterra.....these don't have the required muscle most folks look for but if you are not towing etc then that's what I would go for in terms of efficiency.

..............doin it jeep style!!!:D Three deer and all my gear plusn more room to spare. I am a jeep man through and through. Incidentaly, i just bought a 2002 Grand Cherokee Limited on the weekend as well!!:D

well since we are trucky talking.......what would you animals put onthis for rubber???.......please be realistic..:)

Biggest problem without a lift will be clearance. 31's scrub lightly on my Cherokee durring tight turns.
If you are considering a lift, think long and hard if you really need it.
The vehicle you are driving rated very poorly on the NHTSA roll over tests, in stock form, more height will make it worse.
I have a good foot of clearance in stock form, with the 31's, probably a bit more. Never had a problem. I did however add a skid plate on the gas tank. Might add some on the diffs as well.

I've never understood this problem. Do people not get that they are driving a truck? Failed physics? Hello, it's not a Civic, don't drive it like one. I've been driving 4x4 pickups and SUV's for 30 years plus, and I've never managed to roll one driving on the road. (off road is a completely different story, lol, think of it as a challenge). - dan

This is the truck that I picked up for hunting. It was sitting in a field for 2 yrs. Started it up and drove it home, with no problems. Just gotta do a little bit of body work with a new muffler to pass a safety. Then it will be bush roads for this baby. I can't wait till hunting season.

Anyone have an idea what it would cost to put a lift (maybe 4 IN ???) on this thing. What is a good hight. Also how hard of a job is this? Thanks...Sorry for the thread highjack.:p

coil in the front or leafs ?
i did a 3 inch in my jeep xj fior 35$ plus 3 hours of time if your looking more for the tim taylor / red green lift roughly 40$ 100$ if you want the 4X4 t.v lift kit looking anywhere from 500 -1000$ plus a full day or more

It's torsion bar in the front and you can get an inch or two by just cranking up the adjusters. As far as lifts go for those trucks you are kinda limited, but a 31" tire will fit after the torsion twist.

Trailmaster makes a 5" kit for the S10's, but you're looking at a couple of grand. It's not rocket science, but it's a lot of work to install and align. Rough Country makes a 2" lift, which will get 30-30.5" tires under it, isn't too tough to put on, and won't beat you to death when you drive it. FWIW - dan

Thanks. This will just be a bush/hunting truck so the least amount of money is a priority. I believe that it has coils in the front. Also what is this torsion bar you speak of.

It uses a torsion bar instead of a coil spring in the front if it's a 4x4. Torsion bar is the spring, and has an adjuster that can be cranked up for an inch or 2 of lift. The newer model s-10's came with a ZR2 package which was just that and it fit 31"s. You could go the body lift route to save some money, but judging by the amount of rust on the truck you would just pound out the body mounts by doing so.
