Wouldn't have went out looking for a sporterized K98, but picked one up in an estate lot - think I might have to keep it. Receiver is an Erfurt dated 1915 - barrel is original - supposidly the steps were filed out and then it was reblued. Whoever did it did an amazing job. Stock is designed to fit a taller person (might have to take the spacer out, and I'm 6'2". Bore is bright and shiny.

Don't know if I'll keep the peep or have it drilled and tapped for a base and get an old Weaver.

Any restrictions when handloading for a Mauser of this age (other than the published data)?
Even came with 4 or 5 full boxes of milsurp ammo, and the remnants of the paper case (and carrying strap) they came packed in. :D

Well, its not a K98, its earlier than that. Looks better than most, how is the bore?
The ammuntion you got is in all probability corrosive, so clean it properly after firing.
Assuming the rifle is sound, there is no reason not to fire any standard 8mm Mauser ammunition in it.
You aren't going to be able to get that bolt handle under most scopes, so if you decide to scope it, the bolt will likely have to be altered; and the safety as well.

Bore is perfect - just like a commercial rifle new off the rack.
So a K98 is different from a KAR 98? Guess I learned something new today.
Forgot about the bolt handle - might just leave as is then.

I realize the ammo would be corrosive. Might be worth more as collector ammo than shooting ammo anyway.

Didn't realize that you were referring to the KAR 98; thought you were referring to the later WW2 rifle.
Why not try it as is? Should shoot just fine. It is a nicely done conversion.

I believe it's a Kar 98a from the Erfurt arsenal. If it is, it's a small ring(1.3" dia receiver) Mauser 98 with a a large ring barrel shank(1.1" dia) so there's not a lot of metal left in the receiver ring. Keep the loads mild.

Those are the measurements. So by mild - do you mean factory mild?
Found 2 more eye cups for the peep in a box of cleaning supplies that were thrown in. That and 3 dummy rounds (4 sides are dimpled in with holes in them  )

Thanks for the info. I'm not one of those guys that needs to see if they can get away with 1 more grain, so I guess I should be fine.
