Picked up a nice new hunting rifle.

Nice gun. It wouldn't look any more Germanic if you put a coal scuttle helmet on it. Have you tried it off sandbags with a shotgun slug. It would be interesting to see if it shot anywhere close to the rifles point of impact.

Claven2, your gun was probably regulated with the 1 oz. Brenneke slug. It would be unlikely that it shoots to point of aim with USA made foster type slugs, which are lighter and faster. Just one of several reasons why people who understand their advantages are always searching for Brenneke slugs. Sadly, 16 ga. Brenneke slugs are pretty much unobtainable in Canada unless you find a collectors stash somewhere like an estate sale or gun show. My two O/U combos and two drillings all shoot high with Rem/Win/Fed slugs. But your gun might shoot close enough with foster slugs to be useful. I am currently experimenting with some handloaded Ballistic Products dangerous game slugs, which I have read can be made to shoot to the same POI as Brenneke's.

Interesting. I will have to try patterning the gun with slugs before trying to use one on a deer. Close-in though, it might not make much difference and truthfully, for anything past 25 yards, I would be using the rifle barrel anyhow.

How is the bottom brass plate to the ammo storage stay closed?
I'm thinking of building this feature into some of my rifles in the future.

VERY happy with this acquisition. Planning on taking it on my white tail hunt in New Brunswick this year so that if I shoot a deer on day 1, I can still hunt birds for the rest of the week with the second bbl set ;)

What do you guys think?
Very nice ....

I have long thought that a nice combo gun would be perfect here in NB for both grouse and deer. I was just last week looking at similar guns on Martini's list. I find myself less interested in harvesting a deer, but would just like to have the option of both while enjoying the day out.

Where are you hunting here in NB?

Likely around the sussex area. I'm from Moncton and most of my family still lives in Riverview and Sussex, even if I'm now displaced to Ontario :(
Good deer hunting around Sussex. I'd like to retire there. If you get to SJ and want a feed of moose, let me know.

I moved here from Ont. in 1985. Sure don't miss that GTA mess.

Thanks Man, I've had success there 4 years running - pretty much since I started returning to the area. I also drew a doe tag this year, so I have options. I still own a bunch of land in NB, so I get to hunt as a resident :)

In other news, talking to the former owner, he found the krieghoff .22 magnum insert that came with the gun, so I bought that off him too. Nifty little rig if you've never seen one, it fits into the 16 gauge bbl.
