I bought a nice (95%+) condition Remington 597 custom target in .22 win mag yesterday. Came with 4 mags, and a Bausch&Lomb 2-7x32 scope mounted. Has the 20" bull barrel and laminated stock. The previous (original) owner has done some work to it. He glass bedded the barrel, and also re-contoured the front of the comb to clear your hand better, (awesome job... looks factory).
I bought it with the intention of using it on coyote around here. So, today I was curious what I could do from a "hunting type" position.
So, off of a bi-pod on a semi-stable (read shaky) table, kneeling, and a little on the cold side (no gloves on), I shot four 5 shot groups using 30grain Sierra jacketed hollow point bullets from Federal. Looks bad.... for the coyotes LOL.
Do not confuse these groups with those shot from a rest or bags at a stable platform. These shots would be more consistent with shooting while leaning against a tree or using a rock or fallen tree as a rest. Not bad in my opinion.
The gun functioned perfectly, as my last 597 .22LR did, but this one has a very stiff trigger that wasn't helped by polishing the hammer and fitting the hammer bushings.
I may change to a Boyd's Evo stock as I am left handed and really liked the grip and handling. I understand from sources here that they will fit the magnum even though the guys selling them say they won't (ebay). I will test the accuracy once I get the other stock and, as long as it is comparable I may sell the sporter stock.
This makes 3 Remington long guns I have and I love them all!
