Went looking at the local gunstore for a general rifle and found a used Savage 111 in .270 win. Figured for the price and since I've never owned a .270 win before and heard some good things about it I'd try it out.

So what are your thoughts on the .270 win?

Like yourself, until lately I've never had a 270 but I to have heard nothing but good on the caliber. I thought I'd fill that caliber void and now, circumstances being what they are:redface:, I have a pair. Playing with reloads for them and hopefully I'll get to use in the field soon.

Works for me.

Some would argue that you get better range with 130 grain bullets but I like 150s because then I feel more confident shooting at a black bear, elk or moose if I am in an open area for those species while deer hunting.

(That said, I'm sure many many bears, moose and elk have ended up in the oven from a 130 grain bullet out of a 270)

It is a fantastic cartridge. The 130gr Barnes TTSX can be pushed along at over 3100fps, and that is plenty flat shooting. Not to mention that it is very effective on game.

Who knows, it may become 'available'. Two is definately above the one I 'need':p.

Keep in mind, there is a 'key' of need, that being a Schultz & Larsen, in 358 Norma Magnum.
