I have a .270WSM. I bought it for hunting but I do enjoy a bit of target shooting. I currently have a FullField II 3-9 x 40 but want to upgrade.

I am thinking something along the lines of 4-15 (i know this varies a bit with different manufacturers).

I will set the limit at the 1000 dollar mark for scope and rings, before tax.

What brand/model would you get, what reticle? I thought I had my mind made up on a Leuopold VX-3, but I am so indecisive.

Should I just up my budget to 1500? lol.

I have four Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14 scopes, on my varmint rifles, and I am very pleased with them. You can buy them new for under $1000 before taxes.

That is one that I was looking at... what reticles do you have? Do you like them?

I just have to stop reading the reviews of NF, S&B, and other higher end scopes.

What is the world coming to that I feel inferior buying a 1000 dollar or less scope, ha.

I concur on the Zeiss Conquest as overall the best value for the price.

IMO 4-15 is too much for most hunting applications, but that's just me.

Trouble is with any optics there is no free lunch. You get what you pay for.
A $150 scope is usually, well worth 150 bucks. (except King's Optics which costs a lot and is worth about 50 bucks).
Even rifles today you can get something pretty good for not much money. For good optics you need good glass, manufacturing procedures and quality systems... all of that costs money.

AT huntfest I saw some Minox scopes which look promising too.

I have two 4.5-14X50 Conquests, and one 4.5-14x44 Conquest with the standard Z-Plex reticle, and one 4.5-14x44 with the Z-800 reticle. For precision target use, I prefer the finer Z Plex, but I am starting to like the Z-800 for use on larger targets. My favorite feature of all Zeiss scopes, is the near constant eye relief.

Click on the "Frontier" link above and check out the Falcon line of scopes. They're in your power range, FFP and only $500.00 !!!

I ran across the brand years ago due to an interest I had in the "Horus" reticle system. I figured if Horus was putting their $400.00 reticles in them they must be ok and FFP reticle placement was usually found only in higher end scopes at that time. Leupold, I believe, now offers FFP models too. S&B and USO run with FFP so the Falcon aspires to keep good company no ?

Anyhow, I recently bought one of these and I'm duly impressed, especially for a scope at these prices. These are "Tactical" scopes, built tough, but less than ideal for hunting because of exposed El / Windage knobs and fine reticles. If you can live with that, you'd probably be very happy with a Falcon.

These are built in the UK for what thats worth but you gotta figure that, in part at least, that accounts for the low prices. Building rifle scopes in the UK,,, WTF were they thinking .

Another tire, make that tyre, for you to kick :D.

I say that the obvious choice here for under $1000 quality is clearly a Zeiss Conquest. I would buy no other in that price range for a hunting rifle. I love mine.

There's a nice meopta for sale in the EE ;)

Zeiss conquests can be had for a decent price, and Ive seen some decent deals at the $1K range on this site and another outdoorsmen forum.

Why? You've got all the scope you need. Spend your thousand bucks on another rifle!

I don't find the Burris particularly clear, and I am not a big fan of the reticle. It was included with the rifle as a freebie... so I don't feel too bad upgrading.

The Burris can go on another rifle sometime down the road if I feel the need.

a freebie scope ? was it a special deal for a tikka T3 ?

try to sell it and see what you can get. if no money i would suggest as above take another scope and rifle and stay with that burris combo for shooting and the new one for longer shots ..

all the best.

I have two Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 scopes and find them excellent value for the money - good field of view at 100 yards and very clear on 7x for target shooting - something else I have to add is that they do not have that rather large (I think) fast focus eyepiece

Redfield 4-12X.

Best out there. Around $300. Crazy clear glass, amazing quality and durability.

Have one on my M14 and it's flawless. I have looked through MANY scopes and this Redfield beats them all, many costing 5X as much.

You'd be silly not to at least go look at them ;)
