Picking up my first hand gun ; Hi Point JCP .40 S&W 4.5

Hi points are cheap for a reason. I'm not saying they are a waste of money but don't expect it to be a Glock, Sig, M&P etc. If it just to get you into a handgun at a cheap price for the occasional fun outing at the range I say go for. If you want to do serious training or gaming you need to get something better. If you do go with a Hi Point try a number of different types of ammo to find the most reliable.

That is exactly what i plan to do... test different guns untill i decide if i want to go deeper into it. I purchased a remington 870 for hunting which is under my friend's name untill i get my papers. As soon as i have everything ready i will buy the hi point and will post my review here.

I am thinking of getting this as a first gun since it is so cheap. I read some reviews online and some say it has been working flawlessly and some not.

Done anyone have any experience with this ?

Don't do it. It will be like having an extremely unattractive gf. You'll have fun and feel all cool handling it at home but you'll be too embarrassed to take it out to the range. Remember, we are all snobs. Welcome to the hobby.

If you need to buy a really cheap craptastic gun to wet your appetite, go with god. If it get's you into the sport, it's a good thing.

Still, if it's only the price that is keeping you from pulling the pin on something better, just save a bit longer...

Save a little more coin & buy something else used. A Glock 17, S&W .38 revolver, a Ruger MK II are just a few... A Tokarev & ammo is not a bad way to go either. If you like shooting, you will just dump the Hi Point at a loss in a few months anyhow. If you don't like shooting the fore mentioned can be said again. IMO: The Hi Point is a pistol that should be compared with food stamps: Down & out, looking for a handout...
Besides, .40 S&W ammo ain't cheap!

you only spend your money once on the gun purchase. You will spend serveral times that feeding it. I would get as nice as I can afford because over the long run, that will be the cheapest part of the eqation. Try the feel of a CZ in 9mm.

Happy shooting!

Cheers

DO IT!! who gives a flying :bigHug::bigHug::bigHug::bigHug:. My first pistol was a Hi-Point JHP in .45acp. I wanted a .45 and I got one. What other gun is $250 brand new? No you won't keep it and yes you will lose money on it. This hobby will be the end of alot of your disposable cash anyways. Shoot the thing and let your buddies shoot it and sell it privately for $100-150. Some one on EE will buy it. Problem with a Tokarev is Ammo is hard to find and buying a crate with your gun isn't a viable option since your obviously broke enough to be buying a Hi-point. I took mine apart to clean it and broke something and had to send it in to get fixed.Don't take it apart to clean it!! Just lock the slide back and send patches down the barrel and wipe it and lube it. Why am I recommending one then? Because the thing shot and shot and shot and it was decently accurate as well. More than you will be at this stage anyways. So if you can, pony up the extra cash get a better gun. If you can't then buy the Hi-Point, and be prepared to be embarrassed when telling people you have one. Just shoot it and buy a .40 calibre striker fired gun when you have more cash.

And to all of you that think I am crazy telling this guy to buy a Hi-Point. When he pulls the trigger on his own brand new .40 calibre at the range he will not care about the $250. He will have a big fat smile on his face.

Welcome to the club man:cheers:

Yo Yo Yo if you hang at Jane and Finch you can find them on tha bus for free.

I say get it if cash is tight. One more gun in civallin hads just helps show our strength in numbers. I think it would be a better gun than my norinco m213 anyways

I had a Hi point and the active word of the day is HAD.

First two rounds did not eject properly. Secondly, while attempting to lock the slide back, the locking mechanism gave way several times. Safety Issue!!!.....

Take the time and research various other firearms that are in the similar price range...Tokarev Woodsman add a few dollars and pick up a Norinco.

The FMK is a new brand in Canada, about $500 is some of the stores in Canada.

If the above did not change your mind...trying to get a holster for that thing will be tough, unless you wanting to get one from the manufacturer or getting a nylon holster in Canada

Cheers

you know what, ya it's uglier than the Broom handle Mauser C96, not as reliable, but any gun is better than no gun :) enjoy whatever you purchase, because it sure as heck won't be your last gun you purchase. We just don't want you to be discouraged with your first buy ;)
