I'm wondering if anyone has experience bringing primers + powder back from the US by car? I've previously shipped items to proxies just across the border, and drive down to pick up. However, I'm unsure what the rules are with primers + powder. Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Homeland Security sets up check stations inside the USA, and they search people on their way out of the US for ammunition and components. If they find any, they seize them, and you can expect either an outright ban on travel to the USA, or a lecture , and more scrutiny on any future visits to the USA.

USA laws prohibit non Americans to purchase reloading components in their country. Someone mentioned that check stops are conducted by law enforcement, however from what I heard, it is generally after a gun show. Canada customs is generally a non issue.

Canada Customs all they will want to do is charge the GST on the purchase of powder and primers. However as everyone has correctly pointed out it is against the American ITAR laws. I live fairly close to the border and cross frequently homeland security does on occasion do inspections for vehicles leaving the USA.

US law requires permits be issued prior to exporting ammunition or components from the USA. The penalties can be harsh.

I believe this to be false.
Non Americans can buy these components, but without export permits, they cannot legally take them out of the USA.

Not just gun shows. They also monitor sporting goods/gun shops at or near border towns looking for vehicles with out of country plates. This type of question always seems to come up. People say I've done it without any issues. Get caught on the US side and you will be wishing you didn't roll the dice. It's a no go period, contrary to what some people here say. It's not worth it, especially if you visit the US on a frequent basis.

That covers the Canadian side.

It is the export from the US that is problematic.

I have purchased ammunition from the US while travelling through for work. I know its not recent, but in summer 2018 I purchased a bunch at a Cabelas in the US and crossed into Canada later. I quoted this page when coming into Canada and had no issue. They asked if I had purchased goods in the US, I did, I paid my duty and carried on.

These are the 2013 regulations and until they update it I am assuming its the word for now.

OK, you imported the ammunition into Canada in compliance with Canadian regulations

You violated US federal law when exporting the ammunition from the United States. Fortunately you did not get caught on the US side.

That got ugly fast. You are a "Super Moderator"? I did my due diligence prior to purchase in the US and checked with the Cabelas management and US law prior to purchase. I didn't violate US federal law and unless you are a lawyer you have no basis for making that false statement and I ask you to refrain. I entered Canada, not the US and declared everything before crossing.

Did you obtain a US export license? Were you a licensed US exporter? If the ammunition was removed from the US without the appropriate permits, it was exported in violation of US law.
