Hi All,

I'll be leaving this Sunday for Moose season in Pickle Lake (WMU 16A). We have a bull tag. But none of us has hunted moose before. We've sought lots of advice. Any advice is welcome. But especially, what advice has anybody got about that area in particular? We've been examining maps and have a few ideas.

Our main plan is to be flexible. We'll glass different kinds of open areas when available. We've practiced a lot of calling, and perhaps we'll call from areas if we find good sign. We're prepared to take to the water too.

Is the road to Pickle Lake as bad as some comments I've received?

I was up there probably 5-ish years ago for work surveying a mine, and yes the road was pretty damn rough. The terrain was rough, weather was crap, and the bugs were insane! I would however do it all again for a chance at a big bull.
Good luck with the hunt!!!

Can anybody tell me how rough this road is? This is getting a little scary. How many hours does it take to traverse?

I only drive 30 min from my house, so I can't tell you much about the road but it shouldn't be terrible. We can kick up a hell of a stink when highways get bad. Count on doing 80km/hr.

Don't know the area but I can tell you fall has arrived early so you should be hitting the rut and the moose are moving, if it stays cool you should do fine.

Savant lake/wmu16a???

Thanks for all the info. That sound good about the road.

A couple of mentions of Savant lake area: The map in my copy of the regs really looks like 16a does not start until Lake St. Joseph. Is this wrong?

remember never call in windy condition, you must be able to hear bull answer, and if he does don't call again, just listen, he will usually come.
Most hunters call to much

You are correct. If you have an adult tag for Pickle Lake (16a) you can't hunt anywhere near Savant Lake (16b). It looks like there is a Transmission line at the boundary.
