(PICS ARE UP) Snares while hunting

Yes, that's exactly where I was at Trevor.
Got really close to the lynx about 2 weeks ago, as it casually followed me out of the thickets and of course the camera was at home! Oh well, another thing to check for before I leave the house. This three rabbit day could have been more fruitful, but I stopped after 40 minutes of hunting to clean with natural light. The next day it was a struggle to get just one bunny. Amazing the difference one day of weather makes for hunting.
It's all good.

How's the hunting in BC friend??

Have you been down to Sand River? Lots of tracks down there a few years back. Saw cougar tracks and had an old timer stop and warn us about seeing one there as well.

I am pretty sure that stainless wire is prohibited in Newfoundland... and I thought there was a maximum quota of 40 rabbits to be stored at any given time.

Used to snare rabbits up until my late teens then quit doing it for whatever reason? Maybe because I used to do it at my Grandparents cottage and they sold it when they retired and moved to BC. That was the last time I snared bunnies. I sure enjoyed it though, putting on the snowshoes and setting a few snares then checking them each day. As a young kid it made you feel like you were some big time trapper like the stories your Grandfather told you of his youth and time on the trapline......LOL!!

Caught 4 in three days.....not much compared to some here but that is with only 4 snares set :) And yes at the moment I am in northern ON.

So what is the technical difference between brass and stainless wire and why some regions state one or the other? Is it that brass gives the animal a chance to break away or gives non-target animals a chance to break out of the snare?

I have also seen some state 22ga and others state 20ga. I've seen more of the larger 20ga in the local stores.

On the commercial market, snares are called snares, "slips" is just a regional name for them. If googling for wire, use the term snare in your search. Local Dollarama stores sold 150' Stanley brand utility wire that is galvanized and 20ga, cheaper than the small 26' rolls of snare wire for $2-$4. Not sure about it's suitability, seems a bit stiff compared to brass wire.
