I have never been a fan of heavy for caliber bullets, when the 270 TSX blows right through the head of a big bull hippo at 70 mtrs and then again at 120 mtrs. I'm not sure what more you could ask for. It also shares trajectory with the '06 180 gn spitzer, making 300 mtr and further shots a very real possibility. The fact that the 350 in question won't penetrate any further or impart more damage to the intended game, leaves me asking ..WHY?
If I need more killing power, I go to a bigger diameter........416....458....470.
The longer core of a heavier lead core bullet results in a larger expanded diameter than a shorter, lighter bullet of similar construction when fired into a similar target at a similar impact velocity. The greater the expanded diameter, the more tissue that is damaged and displaced through the passage of the bullet, thus the more severe and complicated the wound becomes for the target. However, the density of the target partly determines the final expanded diameter of the bullet, as does the impact velocity and bullet construction. Although I've yet to see a 350 gr TSX, by contrast to a lead core bullet, all TSX nose cavities are similar in depth within caliber. For example, a 180 gr TSX does not expand any larger than a 130, but its greater weight and slower rate of expansion due to the lower impact velocity, results in narrower wound but deeper penetration. Like wise a 270 and a 300 gr TSXs in .375 caliber have similar nose cavity depths, so its likely the 350 does as well.
The greatest detriment to a long bullet's performance on game is precession (yaw). Thus long bullets tend to perform better when fired from fast twist barrels. When a bullet impacts resistance greater than air, it yaws, and the faster the spin, the more quickly the bullet overcomes that precession. An expanding bullet is helped in this regard as the expanded frontal area effectively moves the bullet's center of gravity forward, and shortens the length of the bullet, encouraging a nose forward attitude.
The solid has a problem though. As neither the length or the center of gravity change, the bullet has more difficulty recovering from precession. For this reason,the rule of thumb for solids is a flat or hemispherical nose, parallel sides, short length, and the higher the velocity the greater the penetration due to the fact that the bullet does not change shape. I would expect 350 and 380 gr solids to perform worse than either 270 or 286 gr solids due to greater precession.
