My apologies if this has been previously posted. A friend sent me these pics of a black fawn. I checked it out and apparently it is due to a rare condition called melanism. Some mature black deer have been harvested in the US. Has anyone else seen these unusual deer?

Pics taken near Austin Texas in May of 2010. Wild deer captured by a photographer. Very rare to see, hope its a buck that someone takes in 5 or so years!

Well some people have taken them. First photo is of black deer taken by a lady in Texas in 1997. Second one was shot in Pennsylvania not too long ago.

Cool.

There used to be a far number of piebald coloured deer around here. We were asked not to shoot them.

by who?

id say a deer like that has better chances of getting taken down by both wild and human hunters. not exactly something that is better for the herd. it would be different shooting one of these critters simply because they are rare and beautiful. but, i dare one to step into one of my shooting lanes ;)

The request to not shoot them was from the farmer and his neighbours. Other hunting groups around us were asked as well. We were under no obligation to do so, but we did. They were kind enough to let us hunt their property and they asked nicely - not demanding.

Everyone ever seen was a doe. There were lots of deer so we didn't really care. The closest we had one during rifle season was like 500-600 yards away on the adjacent property.
