epic thread!!!
first off, we must establish the exact dimensions of the can. secondly, we must establish which brand of coffee is/was in said can. this very important as it can have a severe psychological effect on the person putting the brass in the can. would you want to soil your brass by putting it in the can of an evil coffee brand? and if the coffee is in said can, it would be wise to make coffee and drink it, so that (a) there is more room in the coffee can and (b) you can focus on the upcoming task.
next we must establish the method of insertion. how will the brass be put into the can? horizontally, vertically, upside down, right side up, randomly dumped in, lobbed from a distance?
after that we must find out the exact dimensions of the brass we are inserting and how much space it will occupy in the state of which we inserted it. eg. randomly tossed brass, will occupy more space then neatly stacked brass.
then we must decide whether we want the lid on or off. we could fit more brass in with the lid off (more vertical room) but it could lead to having to start all over if the can is accidentally dumped.
naturally, there are many complex mathematical equations covering the laws of volume and displacement that would assist us is discovering how much brass would fit in your coffee can. but that means thinking, and thinking is something a true redneck doesn't do until after the fact.
i say you just count it as you put in it. if you come up with a number (eg. 500), say plus or minus X number.
eg. my coffee can of X size will hold plus or minus X number of X caliber of brass.
hope this helps, because it was a pain in the ass to write.
