Pietta black powder colt 1851 'Rebel Navy'

If you're really hard up for the cash to where you MUST save the extra $50 over the steel "Northern" models then stick with the .36caliber in the brass frames. Over the long term the brass frames don't tolerate the larger charges of the .44's and they stretch out or beat loose the threads on the cylinder arbor. The brass guns are fine for those that shoot them seldom.

The .36's kick sort of like a soft "target" charge in a .38Spl gun. The .44's kick more like a good solid full power .38Spl or a .44Spl. They also produce a LOT more smoke to add to the fun. Especially when it drifts down the line and the smokeless folks get to enjoy it just as much as you do.... :d For giggles the .44's are just way more fun. But the .44's are best enjoyed when shot from a steel frame gun just so you're sure it'll last a good long time and many thousands of rounds.

I see that in the steel models that they only have the shorter "civilian" models in stock. If you're lusting after the full length guns then I'd suggest being patient if you want a .44 instead of a .36. But if the .36 with the lighter recoil will do you just fine and you MUST have the longer barrel then the brass frame guns will do fine.

The Italian reproductions do show up fairly regularly on the EE. So if you're not in a panic be patient and wait for a deal on a .44 with steel receiver.

Hey, if you like BLING! with your smoking check out their nickel plated 1858 New Army models. The nickel plated .44 is on sale for $389. They don't come any shinier! ! ! ! :d I know it's another $100 but it's a far better option than a brassy in .36.

If you want to get a southern model, get the 1851 'Rebel Confederate' which marstar carries. It is brass framed but it is a correct reproduction of the Confederate manufactured 1851 known as a Griswold & Gunnison. Rounded barrel is the key to the G&G.

In the 1960s the Dixie gun works Catalog had this warning in the description of the brass frame revolvers they sold

"Brass frame revolvers will shoot loose"
