Hi all,

I looking to purchase a .22LR rifle for plinking and have decided to go with either of the top 2 rifles, the Pietta PPS50 or the tried and true Ruger 10/22 non takedown model.

In using the search function (yes, it works) I have read some reviews here and otherwhere that the Ruger 10/22 would need some work on the trigger group out the gate for improvement. It does work with a lot of different ammo, but the Pietta is recommending ammo with a velocity of 1300 fps or higher to work correctly. I am not looking for anything tacticool and don't want to dump a bunch of money into a .22lr rifle. I have a Leapers 3-9X40 red dot scope to put on and that would be it.

The Ruger 10/22 is hard to find right now, so I'm taking my time with the decision. Canadaammo has the Pietta with 5000 round Federal Lightning combo for $499, which seems to be a good deal. I have dealt with them before and would not hesitate to deal with them again!

If anyone has any real world experience with both rifles and wanted to give their input, it would be greatly appreciated. Here are some of the pro's & con's I can find:

Ruger 10/22
Pro's:
-huge aftermarket support for mags, stocks, parts
-50+ yr history
-reliable

Con's
-could use work on trigger/maybe exchange for aftermarket?

Pietta
Pro's:
-comes with synthetic stock
-30 round mags available + BDM 50round drum

Cons's
-made overseas, aftermarket parts could be an issue
-30 round mags are almost twice the $ of Ruger product

hi toyman ...i just bought the pps50 in the wood stock...nice gun for a rookie like me on a budget...i posted a message asking the best ammo to shoot thru the pps since it requires high velocity to chamber properly...but i didnt get a responce...i knew about the ruger 10/22 i just liked the pietta better...i dont mind going against the grain...what im saying is go with what floats your boat...one persons junk is anothers treasure..

Who told you the 10/22 "needs" a new trigger? They should be slapped. The factory trigger works just fine and you can tune it down to whatever you want with basic hand tools quite easily. Its heavy but that's easy to fix. There are a couple things that can help with reliability with lighter, cheaper ammo like radiusing the bolt and polishing the hammer spring strut. Another is to replace the guide rod with a nicely machined one but these things are not needed. Run CCI Blazer, mini mags, velocitor or stingers with good mags and you wont have to worry about reliability. Theyre a lot cheaper than the PPS too if that helps your decision. They just don't look as cool out of the box.

Also i just picked up a couple 10/22's from prairie gun traders the other day and it looks like their website is still showing they have them in stock.

The Ruger is the more sensible choice, for the reasons you noted (plus others.) You'll still have a use for it in 2 or 3 years when the novelty of the Pietta has worn off. On the other hand, shooting isn't really a sensible hobby anyway, so if you like the idea of a .22 that looks like a WWII Russian submachine gun, why not?

I've owned both, actually several 10/22s. The Pietta just see eps to feed better. The mags seem built better and I don't get hang ups. The Pietta will feed all 50 in a drum and skip no beat. Maybe it's me but the Ruger seems to all the time. I forever seem to be clearing it. Could be me I dunno. Just seems to be better build quality in the Pietta, particularly in the mags.

The 10 round mag that comes with the PPS50 is good, the 30 round plastic mag you buy for $60 isn't so good. Mine jammed bad with Blazer ammo in the 30 mag, I've never owned a 10/22 so I cant compare them. The PPS50 is a fun gun though, especially with the drum mag.

Good to know. I'm leaning on the Pietta due to price and availability, $499 with synthetic stock and 5000 round Federal Lightning combo, brings the gun down to $270. Then I'll need the 30 round clip and maybe the drum (just for fun!) and I'll be set for a season.

BUT, I've got a case in the EE and if someone wanted to trade either rifle for it +$, I may entertain that.
