Good day all,

I now have the handgun bug(thanks to you fine folks !) and want to start a nice ,rounded collection of pistols and revolvers. When it come to DA/SA revolvers and pistols ,I pretty have a grasp of things and my "must haves".

For my second revolver ,I fancy a nice SA in .45 LC ,and was looking at a Pietta 1873 SA Millenium in 7 1/2 bbl. from one of the CGN sponsers.

Since I have a lever action in .454Casull ,and also shoots .45LC ,I figure it would be a good match.

I don`t mind being schooled on the subject ,so fire away if you will.

Thankyou !

You need to choose between the all black finish and the more traditional case colored frame, blued cylinder/barrel.
The Pietta's are a well made gun and a good value for the money, I am looking for a SAA in 44-40 to go with a Winchester 1892 that I just got.

The pietta is a nice gun, one that I was looking at. But in the end , I chose a Uberti El Patron ,5.5 barrel. From wolverine. The El Patron has some upgrades and I chose the 5.5 barrel because I've read it's more balanced and will clear the leather much faster :). It's my first handgun ever , so I can't contribute much more.

Yes, the one I saw was the all black ,Walnut grips.

Anything helps !

Also want to get cracking before the prices go up ,due to our falling dollar ,so the Ruger GP100 .357 SS will have to be next !

We just went through this same topic with Brianma. If you click on his name and then click on "view forum posts" you can read a whole bunch on Uberti vs Pietta and some good background information about Ruger vs Pietta and Uberti along with reloading and sighting in these revolvers for particular loads. Sorry for "cheating" with this suggestion but others and I already posted so much and it seems a little silly to re-type the same stuff so soon again.

One thing that wasn't covered was the finish options. I see that you're considering the Millenium model with the matt black finish. Uberti has something similar as well.

I've seen this finish in person and while it's well enough done frankly it lacks the visual pizzazz of the colour case hardened with gloss polished blued cylinder and barrel. There's just something about the dull black "tacticool" look and cowboy guns that seems wrong to me. But as with anything style related like this YMMV so choose what you like.

As always, thankyou.

Sorry for re-hashing this topic.

BUT ,I was not really sure if this particular revolver was blued or if it was indeed flat black (the picture seems to show a flatish finish)

I was also looing very seriously at the Ruger New Model Blackhawk ,also 7 1/2 bbl and about $ 125 more....but it is a Ruger.

Thankyou

Hardly a re-hash since it's still your thread and your question.

It's very much a flat to matt finish depending on how much oil is left on the surface. Think sort of like black Parkerizing.

Don't quote me but I THINK it's a cost cutting thing. It's much faster and cheaper to sand or bead blast the machine or forged finish on the parts and do a Parkerizing like finish or a black oxide finish for a matt black look versus a detailed sanding and polishing needed for the gloss blue and colour case hardened look.

There's some doubt if the guns done with the colour case and blued finish are correctly colour case HARDENED or if it's some sort of faux colour case treatment. At least on the Pietta the slight filing I did to widen the rear notch and correct a slight windage issue I ruined a small file and had to start the work with a light touch of a cutoff wheel in my Dremel to cut through a hard surface. Given the evidence I'm leaning to the idea that they do, or did at one time do a proper colour case hardening on the frames. Now if they do is something similar done on the Millenium models?

Have to say, I had a pietta .44rem mag, was quite impressed with it..color case hardening was sweet, brass trigger guard, hard wood grips, was hefty, ran true and shot great....I sold it because itwasntreally my thing, but I never regretted buying it..
