I have been reading that there are a number of pigs in Alberta and Manitoba. Not.sure how true this is but they are escaped from a farms and seem to be spreading like wildfire.

I know the farmers do not want to here this but I would love to see them in southern Ontario. Great habitat for them. They would be great to hunt.

Not really "pigs escaped from farms (as in feral domestic hogs)" - at least in Eastern Saskatchewan, they are European Wild Boar that appear to winter over very nicely in Moose Mountain Park area. From locals, I was told that a herd of them can keep cattle herd away from water, so they can be very nasty critters to have around.

Are they considered pests? Is there an official hunting season and regulations for hunting them?

I once was given some wild boar meat, I didn't do a good job cooking it.
I hear you have to slow cook them..... anyone had much culinary success before?

Lots here in south east sask. Open season here now and the predict the population to surpass ours soon.

I haven't hear about them for 2 or 3 years now. Still haven't seen any or any sign of them despite working in a big portion of the south east

Tried to eat wild boar twice and a football would have been more palatable. One was a med sized boar and the other should have been edible ,a 125lb sow. NFL............Harold

Feral hogs are in every state of the Union and are as far as I know considered a pest of epic proportions. Here in Oklahoma they cause millions of dollars worth of damage per year. Persons are allowed to hunt them every day of the year during daylight hours, although I understand that they may change that to around the clock. There is no limit nor is there a license requirement.

Every one has heard of wild hogs in Manitoba, no one can or more probably will tell you where. There are probably some but they are kept secret by those in the know and they are not wide spread.

There are virtually no rules to hunting hogs in Manitoba apart from no hunting from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise

I have served wild boar in a few restaurants and make wild boar and whiskey sausage. It is very easy to butcher I can do a carcass start to finish in about a hour. The meat is very very lean with all the fat being next to the skin. So cook it low and slow. Confit is a good way to go, grind it with a a bit of 40/60 pork meat (any butcher will have) it's great meat if done right just like any other game
