Pilla Lens

My favourite Pilla lens (before it had an unfortunate encounter with a car) was a brownish colour with a light transmittance of 25. I shot probably 95% of my targets with those. I would only switch them out in extreme situations (shooting into the early morning sun, extremely low light, heavy rain...)

I think I like shooting darker lenses than most people do though.

I wouldn't worry about the "High Def" "Max Boost" options too much. Pick something that works for you and go with it.

Brad.

Personally, I prefer purple. However, I tend to see most people using an orange lens. You should really try them before you buy that "one" lens. Purple tends to mute the background so the target stands out and the orange tends to highlight the target. Your mileage may vary based on your eyes, the background that you have and the light conditions.

Bill are those pilla wrap style glasses available in a prescription lens? I am using Randolph Rangers in the largest size frame available but find the spring steel arms quite uncomfortable after an extended period. I’m due for a new prescription so changing styles would be a very doable option for me.

My son uses the medium orange and he loves it. We shoot skeet against a usually blue background and 5-stand against a forested background and he says the targets (orange) are nice and bright.

I don't use Pilla - but can probably comment that color preference is different for everyone. Purple actually sucks for me no-matter what the background. Orange, amber, bronze depending on light, the contrast is awesome for me. Even berries on a bush turn almost neon. Vermilion doesn't seem as strong a contrast, but I seem to shoot well them. I prefer darker tints.

If I had to choose just one, it would be amber.

I believe Pilla uses an insert for their wrap style glasses. Some like them, some do not.

Since I only shoot with one eye open (tried to keep both open but just can't do it) I wonder if I can get 50% off by doing just one lens in my prescription.

Hi Frank,

I have a set of the Magneto's for that reason. Ouch $$$. If you want a prescription, you get a set with the prescription insert. They are different than the regular ones and the shield won't fit each other. Here is a link .... https://pillasport.com/collections/magneto-rx-series .

Here are another series with the insert ... https://pillasport.com/collections/outlaw-rx-series

The curved lens / shield are guaranteed 100% optically correct by Pilla. They are made by Zeiss. You have to use the insert for a prescription. I use contacts with mine. The Magnetos are $2,249 US with 3 lenses and the RX package. The Outlaw with the RX insert and 3 lenses are $1,288 US. You can shop around and pay a little less than that.

Most people I know that have tried the RX prescription inserts didn't like them (for skeet anyway). Generally they end up using contacts, or moving to a different brand.

I got into a set of Pillas early. 2 frames and 5 lenses for under $600CAD. There is NO WAY that I'd drop $1-2KUSD for 3 lenses and a frame. That is a lot of targets/ammo/lessons that would actually improve your game.

I agree the price sounds high. But people must paying it.

When I clicked on the link above I was like omg... I could get laser eye surgery for only a bit more money than the magnetos...

I got good feedback from Lawrie @ Dr. Nolt in Edmonton. I had the Outlaw with the max orange. Sold them after getting a Panther with 4 lenses.

Now I got:

45mx orange
76hc yellow
10ed dark brownish
26ed purple

Lighting conditions determine what lens I use for trap/Skeet or target shooting.

Yes, but you still have crappy glasses (LOL).

Like Brad, I got mine for early at a lower price and I was still working. I couldn't pay that now that I am retired. But, then I would not have my Kolar and Spolar, either.

Does anyone know of any retailer or optometrist that stocks Pilla products in southern Ontario or in Alberta, as I am a hands on type for fitting.
Mike.
