I am looking to buy a McMillan A5 stock for my Rem 700...I was reading the order form and I am stuck on the question regarding pillars...The options are "no aluminum pillars" OR "Factory Installed machined pillars"

Easy question -----What are pillars? and what does the stock come with standard if I don't upgrade?

Pillars are aluminum sleeves that are glued in the holes drilled for the action screws. The purpose of the pillars is to prevent the stock material from compressing as the screws tighten the receiver to the stock. When the screw tightens you can feel a definite stop and the screws can be torqued evenly and if you mark the screw position, returned to that torque repeatedly provided the torque is not so great as to stretch the screws. There is a question as to the usefulness of pillars on stocks other than wood, or on glass bedded stocks but I have them installed on my A-5 and my other custom and customized stocks, in addition to glass bedding.

I assume that the stock if ordered without pillars would simply have the mounting holes drilled or formed in the fiberglass. To get the best performance out of your stock I suggest you have it glass bedded to your rifle, and pillars could be installed at the same time for a more precise fit than would be possible from the factory.

Boomer: There may be questions on the usefulness of pillars but that is only because some shooters confuse normal syn stocks with aluminum block stocks (HS Precision Style). Unless the stock is made out of metal all stocks will compress to a certain degree and without pillars it is possible to torque the action screws enough to even bend the action. Pillars prevent this. Glass bedding is used to make a mirror of the action on the stock so that gaps are not exploited to bend the action (bend sounds pretty harsh - I believe the term is "introduce stress") so that is why even aluminum block stocks are recommended to be glass bedded.

The factory installed pillars may be of no use. There are times when you need to slightly raise the action from the stock, which makes the factory 1s useless as they are generic, not fitted to "your" particular situation.
My advice is to make pillars that are specifically fitted to "your" particular application. they are not hard to make.

The best advice is to send you stock and action into the gunsmith (ATRS above does really good work) and have him pillar/glass bed the stock for you. If you are willing to drop the cash on a McMillan A5 you might as well have it installed correctly. Based on your original question, it doesn't sound like you have the experience to install it yourself, if you can I apologize - my intent wasn't to insult your intelligence. Oh and to answer your original question, the A5 doesn't come with pillars, you need to pay extra for them. If you buy the pillarless model Rick can install pillars while also glass bedding your action. While it is in there you might as well, throw on the detachable mag system, put on the gucci bolt handle and accurize the rifle. It will save you another trip later if you decide to upgrade.

You nailed it Glock4ever....I wouldn't touch it with tools because I have no idea what I'm doing yet...Framing, cars, electrical no prob....Firearms it goes to a pro.

Thx for the answers, It seemed odd to me that McMillan which is a high end expensive stock wouldn't include all the bells and whistles, but Rick explained that...Thx guys
