Those "yanks" are soo lucky,they can build their own from scarch

would like to just cut my barrel back to about 16.25 I think thats the standard lenght for a AK. 18.5 just seems to long.

And get/find an AKM muzzle nut or a AK74 muzzle brake.

stupid question ,Is it possable to change a under folder to a side folder?

I know thats not the same rifle.But, can it be done fairly easy?

you would want to go from a side folder to an underfolder. Chinese underfolders have special indents in the reciever that are very difficult to remove.

Would you have to change any thing on the gas system if you made the barrel really short, like you would on a AR type system?

I think this could be a really cool project,that few could do, and many would envy

you would have to atleast change piston length once you got short enough to have to move the gas block. Or you could just order the right parts.

You can only take a couple inches off an AK barrel without modding the gas system before you will start having problems. Then you will need to cut the bottom handguard, gas tube and gas piston. I've had a few shorties built that functioned flawlessly with the chopped system and seen many more that have just cut a few inches off the barrel and have problems.

Its an 18.5" barrel ,as was required before they made them prohibited,and the basic AK barrel is 16 1/4"(thats with 7.62,this is a 5.56.if it makes any difference).

So could it be taken down to ,say 14.5 and still work O.K.?

Over on the AK.net I found a thread about short barrels,it more or less says you can take them down to an inch infront of the gas block ,weld the front sight on top of the block and it works.
