Hi,

Would it be safe to shoot a pump action, in this case either a Remington 870 or Ithaca 37 built in the 50's with 20 inch bbl's, that has a tiny pin sized hole in the barrel? If not would this be an easy fix by a gun smith?

Thanks

There is something very wrong with that barrel, do not use it. It's either suffering from some massive corrosion or there is an invisible crack. Have it checked out by someone qualified. Holes don't just show up without a reason. Barrels are fairly cheap, the side of your face isn't. I'm not even sure where you can buy an eye, teeth, ear drum or jaw bone.

Really??

The pinhole isn't the problem....
The reason there is a pin hole IS. Metalurgic flaw, previous muzzle obstruction, foreign object embedded in a shotshell, magnetic pull of jupiter on the steel.....whatever caused led to the hole is a problem. Besides the very likely problems with the integrity of the barrel something catching on an irregular surface on the way out and then splinters of barrel/lead/wad etc escaping...or a collision resulting in a partial or full muzzle obstruction.....
Are any of these possibilities worth risking for the price of an 870 barrel...any barrel???

Launching lead shot down a steel tube driven by an explosive propellant charge several inches from your head/face/eyes.......

Not bashin' ya...truly mystified that the question is posed tho.

Is it possible that there were mid-barrel beads on these barrels? The beads were removed when the barrels were chopped?

Good point. Sure looks like a mid-barrel bead on the 870 SA.

I'm far from being an expert on metalurgy. I'm also not a gunsmith. I'm a simple economist. I collect older firearms as a hobby. This web site is meant to be a resource for dumb asses like myself. Thank you for clearing that up for me.

I'd let a "buddy" try it.....lol

Really though, I'm sure it'll be fine. I'd be worried if it was near the chamber, but that far out....

On the other hand, if it was mine, 870 barrels are cheap, I'd buy a new one and sell that one on the EE for double the price of the new one with good pics of the hole.

A lot of semiauto shotguns have holes in the barrel, just that they control the direction of the gas. So i would want to know where the hole is and if it is drilled or how it came to be.
